Not that I'd rule out a future international match entirely, but I had similar feeelings to this guy and The Double should recieve a red card for his discrace remarks for a moderator.

Well you obviously weren't there The Double. I won't say that all Peru/Agentina fans are rude, but there were plenty there that didn't care one bit about the Metro game. It's completely OK that they don't care about Metro, but when they there chanting for Peru and Argentina during another team's game? Excuse me for thinking that's a tad disrespectful. Passing back their Peru flag(10 times) during the Metros match and blocking the view of the game? You can't even argue that it's disrespect because I didn't see them do it once when the Peru/Argentina game started.

If you want to show up early and see the first game, pick a side to cheer for or keep my mouth shut. Once the game is over, go nuts and do whatever you want. That's your time. Imagine if the ESC started chanting for the Metrostars during the Peru/Argentina game. You can imagine the stares we'd get.

I was at the game and I get your point. However, doubleheaders are good for the league because many of those fans who initially come to see their countries, end up being a MLS fan.

That is true because I did it myself. And if I was at some other doubleheader, with my team playing second I could careless about the first, and f*** all their fans. Specially when there was only 10 of them. I mean Im more pissed that only 10 ESCers showed up than the fact that Peruvians took over the section. I mean if we have had a half decent turnout it wouldnt have been half as bad. I did get tired of the stupid flag going up and down, specially during the last moments. But oh well what are you going to do, bring more f***ing people next time and stop blaming others. Blame MFO for not getting more fans into the stadium.

No they dont. We've had double headers since the begining of the league and yet we cant even get 15K on a nice Saturday afternoon. I dont think people are coming back.

Jay, I agree with you, but this was not any different from any other Metros doubleheader I've attended. Everything you mentioned is not surprising to anyone who has attended one previously. Why do you think so many Metro fans stayed away for this match?.....it's because of past experience.

If there were more than 800 fans who actually came to see the MetroStars I'd be shocked. Where was the ESC? Where were the "Wolyniec guys"? It was like being in a different stadium.

I did feel bad for the Metros when guys like Wolyniec, Magee, Bonseu and Glen were trying to warm-up behind the goal but didn't have room because a group of Argentinian players came out to watch the match.

Why do you care what the rest of the audience did? I was there for Metro, what else mattered? If you care about all that other nonsense so much that it makes you not want to go see Metro if its a doubleheader, maybe you're going for the wrong reasons.

Agree with Metrocorazon about 101. Pretty desolate. If you didn't make it for some bullshi& reason, you have no reason to criticize the team.

It was a complete mess getting into the stadium tonight on route 3.We must have sat on the transit bus for 30min+ to move the last mile and change into the stadium. Then when were get there because of the darn fair we couldnt find the ESC window and by the time we got on a regular line we were told by the ticket agent that the esc section had sold out...Im guessing it was the peru fans that took it over that made it sold out...When we finally got into the stadium it was about the 70th min of the metros game...

It's all been said numerous times. But I haven't been around for the past doublehaders. Aside from our loss, I've never been so furious before about 101. I left for a second and the freakin' mob took over. Disrespectful **********. Good thing the Argies won. The remaining 101 could have at least made an effort to challenge. If you made the World Cup clap your hands....!!!! Sooooooy un gringo Sooooy un gringo un gringo soy yooooo!!! God i'm f*** pissed.

Yep - I was fine until we were losing. Then I was looking to play hit the Peruvian

They weren't that bad. Plus Metroflip should get a Nobel Prize for his work amongst the Peruvian heathans tonight. He was drink and funny.

I'd feel different right now if the Metros won.

And if our bus wasn't stuck 40 minutes cause some jackass in a Toyota doesn't knwo how to drive

Let's facte it - a 7:00 game on a Wednesday night? Why do you think they pushed hard for a doubleheader tonight of all nights? without the game it would have been 5k max.

"I was at the game and I get your point. However, doubleheaders are good for the league because many of those fans who initially come to see their countries, end up being a MLS fan."

Metrocorazon is dead-on here: this is quite simply, not true. A majority of the fans who turn-up for these doubleheaders (or other matches involving forieng clubs and MLS teams) do not return to follow the resident MLS team.

Using the New England Revolution as an example: the thousands of Portuguese fans who reside in the region, and who have come in numbers to watch the likes of Benfica and Sporting take on the Revolution, have not come back to watch the Revs. Likewise, the Brazilian fans who who turned up to watch Revolution matches when countryman "Cate" was in the team, have not come back. The Italians that used to show up to watch Walter Zenga... left when he was no longer with the team.

Quite simply, these are fans who turn up not to support the MLS club or the league, but a countryman or club respective of their national identification.

    It just doesn't happen.

Some of you guys need to figure out that what a soccer atmosphere should be like.. A little noise, some shenegans and some passion.. A bunch of people sitting together singing and chanting ******** is fun. Last night show'd its not the total number of people in the crowd (maybe there was only 35 or 40k) but the passion of the fans.. Perhaps Metro should try to engage more real soccer fans instead of just trying to sell tickets.. maybe there were 10,000 peru fans there, but it sounded like 5 times that much....

Most serious ESCers/Metro supporters have had enough experience with 'international doubleheaders' over the years to know NOT to make an effort to make it out to such spectacles - especially on a weekday night. Both in the abstract and in practice, it's nothing a festival of disrespect for the team we care about. And while other fans in the stands may have a part to play in that, it all starts with the people who set these things up in the first place.

Repeated for the benefit of MFO: Most serious Metro supporters know enough NOT come out to doubleheaders. And they don't. And then you've got half-assed, Metro-as-comical-sideshow fiascos like you had last night. You're killing your 'product' (not that that's anything new).

    No kidding! Who woulda guessed.

You're preaching to the choir here, man. I think every single person in here, people who obviously care enough about a team to spend way too much time fixated on it, are all for 'atmosphere'. Talk to the people running and promoting the team, who have seemingly done everything to push away that type of fan over the past 9 years. The guys complaining about last night have spent more energy, money and time nobly trying to create that atmosphere here for the Metros from nothing - they're the last people who deserve to be slighted. And it's not right to blame them to for not showing up last night, either - we have ALL been this stupid rigamarole more times than I can count.

The important thing is that there may be some fans that come out again and that 30K MAY have watched the Metros and that:
    1. The level of play in MLS has risen since that last time some of the Argentinian and Peruvian fans paid-half attention to the game.

    2. The Metro fans that were at the game made alot of noise when the Metros scored.

I have never, ever, come on these boards and said "I told you so", but when I came on here and broke the news about this doubleheader, and added something like "that's bad news", I was berated, which quite surprised me. Old Metro supporters have a long history with these doubleheaders, and I was surprised to find that few seemed to mind them. I thought most Metros fans going back a few years felt the same way. Maybe some of you forgot. Let's make a mental note about this one.

Last night wasn't nearly as bad as the infamous Bulgaria-Ecuador doubleheader from a few seasons back. It was about 60 degrees warmer and none of the Argentina or Peru supporters were mistakenly rooting for the Metros opponent ala the Ecuador supporters who thought the Columbus Crew (in their yellow jerseys) was Ecuador.

riverplate gives you the REAL lowdown

I've sufficiently recovered from last night to respond to this highly laughable thread. Thank God I took today off.

BOY, YOU PEOPLE TAKE THE ####ING CAKE. What the hell is wrong with all of you?

First of all, what is this crap about not going to the game because of "past experience?" If past experience was so bad, that should be an encouragement to come out in huge numbers and show your mettle in the face of adversity. To make sure it never happens again. But that would require having a spine.

If you can't get this supposedly 400-strong ESC membership to buy up as much of 101 as possible, or the surrounding area, how do you not expect fanaticos tougher than you are to take the place over and really make it rock. For the weeks leading up to this match, the main discussions from ESCers on the boards seems to have been how much they'd have to pay to get in, as if 28 bucks for two games is a hardship. Cough up the dough and stop crying. I paid $65 and it was worth every penny.

I'll tell you what the problem is: You're embarrassed. These "heathens" (as one of you colorfully referred to the Peruvians as) come into your house and blow you off and take charge. Well, there were hardly millions of Peruvians in 101 at the start of the Metro-Rapid match, and I didn't see you guys exactly asserting yourselves and yelling up a storm. You've got to let people know you mean business. That starts with NUMBERS.

Secondly, the crowd was exceedingly polite. There were certainly no altercations in Section 111 or 112 that I was aware of, and I only recall one time that the crowd's attention was diverted to the stands because there may have been something going on. And I was there from the very start, so don't tell me differently.

Peruvian and Argentine fans applauded during the MetroStar match. They weren't "not paying attention." Were they as animated as they got for the international? Of course not. But they were hardly disrespecting the MLS match. Naturally, they were anticipating the coming friendly, and that occassionally came out in bursts of chanting, especially as the numbers of fans continued to increase. Neither side wanted to be outdone by the other. It was like a competition. Totally understandable.

And Peru and Argentina fans were getting into the chants and singing all over the stadium, something you'll never witness at a MetroStars match. Of course, they don't need a small clique of self-appointed "true believers" behind the nets, pretending that they are the only real fans, leading the charge. All the Peruanos and Argentinos were free to join in the fun and make merry.

If you ask the Central and South American players on the MetroStars whether they felt disrespected. I'm sure they would say "no." For MLS to get its due, MLS fans have to show up and defend their teams and league. Get your voices heard! Don't expect MLS to be defended by what you think of as heathens, or expect them to keep their mouths shut and emotions in check. They are there to display their passion for their teams. You must do the same!

The flag complaint is ridiculous. The large flags would appear and then disappear rapidly. Besides, it's always fun to see those undulating huge flags pop up every now and then. Go with the flow, guys. Get with the program.

It was a good, but loooong night. I even enjoyed the mini-concert at halftime. Sure beats having a bunch of brats push giant inflated soccer balls all over the field. But then, we were dealing with an adult audience for a change. They may have been heathens, but at least they were adult heathens! And the heathen teenagers I saw around me were watching the match, not clowning around like the picture-perfect home-breeds one usually encounters at an MLS-only match.

I got to the Port Authority fairly early, I guess the bus pulled out around 5:30 or so. Got to the stadium in good order. Don't know what happened later, but we were all warned about trying to be early. Coming home was better organized than at previous friendlies. Moved well and orderly. Mostly Argentina supporters, since all of us stayed past midnight to watch the trophy ceremony and hail the boys.

Fine time overall. Can't wait till next year's Copa Fiesta! And Bloomberg was there, too. Way to go, Mike!

P.S.- Yeah, there was one problem. Stop pouring the beer into stupid plastic cups. It takes a million years to buy one. Eff-ing waste of time.
