How can we possibly not think of offering this guy another contract. It's a disgrace that this man has to wait until the end of the season to find out his future....Dennis Bergkamp, ABSOLUTE LEGEND!

http://www.che.utexas.edu/korgel-group/bergkamp_1.mpg (10mb) - Right click to save to for optimum playback. It's a bit slow otherwise.

Have you ever seen 3 touches executed to total perfection such as this?

P.S. If a certain Dutchman playing up north ever reaches those heights in such a big game (last minute winner in a World Cup Quarter Final), i'll eat my hat!!

We've got Dennis Bergkamp, We've got Dennis Bergkamp, We've got Dennis Bergkamp.......

This best part of that is you don't even need to know the language to understand it.

Yupp, my dutch isn't too hot but judging by the commentators hysterical reaction you'd have to guess he were a clogger!

Seriously, i've repeated that goal about 50x already, it gets harder and harder to comprehend. I play a fair bit of amateur football and there is no way under that kind of pressure i could control the a 60 yard pass coming over my shoulder with a defender a yard away from me running at pace. Obviously he is a professional footballer but that is pure genius. The technique involved is perfection itself.

    Give that man bloody contract!

I think you're preaching to the choir as far as everyone here is concerned. Dennis is a joy to watch and hopefully we'll get to watch him for one more year.

On this subject, does anyone know if there are any DVD's or videos for sale that are just Bergkamp highlights? I would love to acquire something like that.

What a way to start the morning! It is just as I remembered when I saw it live. You could just about see the terror in the defenders' faces.

Thanks for the link, that play by play makes it even better. That is my favourite Bergkamp goal. Second would be that one against Newcastle from a few years back.

    Thanks for the link.
It was just as great a goal as I remembered it, maybe even better. The audio definitely added to the experience. I always enjoyed the keeper's reaction - sheer resignation.

I assume you're talking about his goal in the semi-final (IIRC) of the FA Cup in 2002. The one where he flicked the ball one way around the defender while he went the other, met on the other side and then scored.
Every time I see a highlight of that goal I still can't believe it. Amazing.

    and the assist?

Who was that on the pass to Bergs? Wasn't too shabby, either.

IIRC, it was Frank De Boer. I'm not 100 percent on that though.

After watching the Arsenal win the double in 1998, this was the goal that finally made me an Arsenal fan. I went from "hmm, these guys are pretty good." to "this guy is amazing!"

Yeah, that's the one. I'm not sure if it was a cup tie or just a regular league match though. There are probably only a handfull of players in the world who would be able to think up and execute something like that. I'm glad he'll be available for both CL legs against Chelski, and if Arsenal end up facing Real after that, I think his passing will cut them to shreds.

I just had a thought. If Bergy is affraid of flying, how did he get to the States for the World Cup?

The apocryphal story is that it was during this trip to the 1994 WC in the U.S. that he developed his fear of flying. The details are sketchy (or at least my knowledge is). I've heard some say it was on the way back to Europe...rough air or something and I've also heard it was during the trip from Orlando to Dallas for the quarterfinal match against Brazil. Don't really know for sure but maybe another Gooner here does?

    That's what started it IIRC.

The Dutch had a really bad flight over and he vowed to never fly again, and took a ship back to Europe. Or so I've heard anyways...

Possible, but I don't remember hearing stories about how he had to be driven from Orlando to D.C. back to Orlando to Dallas. Maybe there were such stories and I just don't remember them but my hunch is that the incident occurred on one of those last flights if not the one back to Europe.

I'm quite certain it was a league match, (but a very important one, as we sat third in the table at that point, with Newcastle second and the poopyheads first). We also played Newcastle in the FA Cup the following week; I believe it was the quarterfinal round.

But the point is: another amazing goal from DB10!

You've got to give it up to Frank for the feed.

Is it any wonder I so enjoy Dutch footballers?

And it was the flight over to the US that begat the "Non-Flying Dutchman"

Why doesn't he just go to therapy? I'd hate to think that his absence alone could possibly be a reason for a future exit in the CL.

The story I've heard is that on his way home from the US there was a bomb threat on the plane he was on just before take off. After that, he was done with flying.
