From this weeks City Paper (Vol. 23, No. 12 March 28-April 3, 2003) P. 40-41 (quote from p. 41 about 1/4 down): Bend it Like Beckham directed by Gurinder Chadha Review by Arion Berger Mark Jenkins pulls the "we call it soccer" thing the next page over but with out being such a pompus ass about it. I prefer physical violence by proxy, and I hereby appoint you as my thug due to your proximity. Send me his ear as proof you've completed the job.
Arion Berger Done and done, good sir. I just hope there are no typos. Dear Ms Berger, I enjoyed your review of "Bend it Like Beckham" in this week's City Paper. It's a movie that my whole family intends to see, and your review certainly adds to the good buzz we've been hearing about the movie for months. But I must protest your gratuitous slam of the sport of soccer. I'm sure you meant it to be off-hand and flip, but it was uncalled for. The fact that the protagonist had a passion for the game obviously didn't interfere with your enjoyment of the film, so why denegrate it? This city supports two professional teams. The Metro area is riddled with players and supporters of all ages. Please don't be so ready to publicly ridicule their interests and enjoyment. Thank you for your time. ("Name & address withheld by request." -ed., Penthouse Forum) Of course, what Claymore and Bryan76 said was just wrong. So don't get caught dadman
i looked on the citypaper website but couldn't find any letters to the editor. were any published on the soccer slight? i don't get the city paper this far out and i am unlikely to be in town until next week.
Well there seems to be one from some blowhard Rob Gillespie of Clinton, MD and another rant from a Kelly Young of Mt Pleasant. Do we know these people? ;-p K
Re: Re: I invite you to light her up that was the main reason i wrote in. folks who "don't get it" are always going to have the reaction she did. i saw it as an open door to try and plug DCU--i hope that mention didn't get cut, it wasn't exactly a persuassive missive. i hope the letter by the other person was more compelling.
