http://theunassociatedpress.com/i-believe-that-you-are-hipsters/ Has anybody else read this blog? The basis of his opinion is so flawed. We aren't like Oklahoma City, because soccer has been in KC since the beginning. The KC Cauldron was around long before the Wiz turned into "Sporting." The Wizards drew 50k against Manchester United, and U.S. National Teams games have dawn great crowds as well. The Power & Light District was full of fans during the World Cup. No question, people in Kansas City care about soccer. "Sporting" didn't just show up to a soccer-barren city in 2011, and become an overnight sensation. Obviously the quality ownership, new stadium and good team have improved attendance and general interest, but you can say that about any team in any sport.
haahahah a sports blogger calling anyone else a hipster. I believe that no one cares (about this article)
I love how he makes a line about people being nice, and saying that they are only nice to have a reason to be accepted in life. Yet, he writes a blog to people for free. Seems like to me that he needs a little acceptance in his life as well.
Some of the stuff is spot on, others well........ he misses completely. For someone who has been a fan of this team from the beginning I find it a bit offensive but whatever. I think this author is just now finding out about it and assumes everyone is as well.
Based on my understanding of hipster, wouldn't it be the people who were fans before last year who are the kc soccer hipsters? I mean, I thought the hipster motto was "I was into X before it was cool." Then they abandon X once it goes "mainstream"
it's just another dose of ignorance. we've all heard it a thousand times with different words and from different angles.
I thought so. What he is describing (the bandwagon fan) is like the complete 180 of hipster by standard definition. The guy that show up to an SKC game in a 1996 wiz jersey is a hipster. (or a Spurs jersey...or an Attack jersey)
But he goes through SO much care to make sure he filters out those who actually like soccer or have been supporting the team for 15 years and whatnot... "It isn't about soccer" (though he thinks it's a boring sport and a stupid decision to like soccer) "It's about the bandwagon fans" From what I can gather, he's basically trying to construct his argument such that he identifies the hipsters which are there and then calls them hipsters... but then insinuates that because of those people he identified, everyone else is a hipster... oh, and if you aren't a hipster then, well, he's not talking about you, he's talking about the hipsters... Same thing goes with the whole ownership stuff. Sporting KC's ownership is nothing special because anything they do that might be considered special simply boils down to some sort of personal gain in some manner and that makes them no different than anyone else. Partnering with LiveSTRONG might seem like a terribly awesome idea, but really there's just some selfish reason for them to do that and so it really isn't awesome after-all. But ultimately he just comes off as I would imagine a long-time Red Sox fan sounded like when they finally got their championship. "Being a fan isn't about having FUN, it's about SUFFERING." In any case, it all comes across quite petulant to me... "I don't understand this whole SKC thing, so I'm pretty sure that all those people going to games don't either. Why, they're probably not even actually having fun, they just think they are. They couldn't possibly be going to actually enjoy a sporting event because soccer is hardly a sport. So let me talk about this thing which I have no understanding of and haven't even taken the time to try and tell you all about how you're wrong... because I'm sick and tired of having to be reminded that the end-goal of a sports team is to win games and win trophies when they run SKC highlights on the evening news before moving on to the hapless Royals" In a way, though, shows just how far SKC has come in this city when the Royals and Chiefs fans start to feel threatened... though, to be fair, this guy seems to be almost paranoid so we shouldn't take too much out of it, but it is something.
I stopped reading at about the point where he thought people could actually buy an entire Boulevard proton pack of beer. That's a pretty wild assumption that clearly flies in the face of common sense and reason, so I didn't hold out much hope that the rest of the "article" would be well reasoned.
Wait.. I thought we were obligated to read stuff to the finish, no matter how poorly written or thought out it was.... You're telling me we're allowed to stop!? Man, the internet is going to be such a better place, now that I don't have to listen to idiots all the time.
Oh look, a football reporter who hates soccer writes a witty article. Go f*ck yourself. That hipster word, you keep saying it but I don't think you know what it means.
Opinions aside, it's pretty amazing how factually wrong he is on a lot of the "facts." The worst part about the internet is that everybody has access to the internet.
Atta boy, first rate hipstering there. BTW thank you everyone for reading this asshat's article so the rest of us don't have to.
The piece is a mess in a lot of ways: misuse of words ("fabrication"), misspellings ("nuance"), going blue for a moment ("midget orgies") without making that part of his voice throughout, not providing Kauffman or Arrowhead's health inspection records to provide something in the way of baseline by which to judge LSP's, trying to rag on Boulevard without going all-in and actually ragging on Boulevard... and then the prognostication that all the fair-weather SKC fans will return to the Chiefs and the Royals (as if there's no overlap?) and all will be well--begging the question what the problem is in the first place? He's annoyed that people are enjoying themselves in ways different from how he enjoys himself? I can see why he throws the word "hipster" around the way overreaching politicians throw the word "terrorist" around: hipsters get annoyed when people enjoy the same things as the hipster, and are always trying to discover new things (beyond, you know, baseball, basketball and football).
hipster isn't the right word, but i guess i see what he's saying, in a way... but to me it just makes me curious about attendance 5-10 years from now. and it happens in sports... new stadia and arenae draw new people... but i think it's different than like... the arizona cardinals whose fairweather fan base is more interested in showing off that they can afford tickets than actually attending games if they're losing. i guess what i mean is that there's nothing wrong with the phenomenon he's describing. there are probably a bunch of phonies in the mix and people trying it on for size who won't be back... but there's a chance for a lot of people to really grab ahold of it and i wouldn't call it a bad thing. i wish i'd gone to the royals game tonight to get a buck o'neil bobblehead, and i hate baseball and just like buck o'neil... but if i happened to really start to get into baseball because i went to that game, i don't think it's worth the effort to point out that the bobblehead promotion has little to do with the sport blah blah
