Height This whole thing is surreal. Hell, the kid who is probably the top 11 year old in the north Chicago suburbs (region of 1 million people) is 4' 6". He succeeds just fine playing against guys who are 5' tall, or even 5' 3'. But 5' 10" ... gimme a break. (My kid played in a 3 vs. 3 scrimmage against a national champion U12 team. That team is regarded as being good-sized and physical for a U12 team. The biggest player was maybe 5' 6".) These Adus mature so unbelievably early that it's hard to project their future growth -- not just in size, but in soccer maturation.
So Fredua is 5'10" and Freddy is 5'8". According to some people around here Freddy is older than 13 because he is just to big to be 13. So Fredua must be older than Freddy. Which means Freddy's younger brother is actually Freddy's older brother. Which means Freddy's mom is not actually his mom but his younger sister (and I heard she is way better than Mia Hamm), which means they are not actually from Ghana but from Conyers, Georgia, which means Freddy is actually Clint Mathis nephew, which means Freddy likes Super Cool Ranch Doritos.
Freddy The 2nd Saw the kid play, I'd say he is fairly technically skilled, but tactically naive, like most or all 11 year olds would be, however he is by far not anywhere near the most talented, skillfull, strong or quickest player I saw in the games , but then again he was playing for a 1988 select team (out of Potomac MD) which would make him about 3 years younger than the rest. Size wise he was quite tall and one of the taller players, it is hard for me to believe he was eleven (when one parent said he is 13) hell who knows, But by no means was he the fastest or strongest. Just my thoughts and observations
5' 10" You can sneer all you want, but a 5' 10" 11 year old soccer player is a strange thing. (Go to a U12 game sometime and try to find a field player at 5' 10".) I'll bet you that if you find some list of the top 100 soccer players in world history (goalkeepers aside), you won't find one of them that was 5' 10" at 11 years old. Maybe not even 5' 8". Is there any limit to your credulity? If an immigrant player came to the U.S., was 6' 2", had three kids and college degree, and had a birth certificate saying he was a U9, would you say, gosh well there are 6' 2" 9 year olds, we had one in my school, plus he has a birth certificate? Yeah, you probably would, if the player was good.
I hate to say it, but I'm leaning JohnR's way on this. That height has got to put him in the top .1%, or higher, for his age. I mean, I did see some kids who were 5'10" or close to it playing little league baseball, but they were ALL 12s. A point I've made about Freddy is that while he's toward the right of the fat part of the bell curve, he's definitely in the fat part. You can't say that about his brother. When I saw Freddy, I said, if you put a gun to my head, I'd say he looks 14. I can definitely believe he's 13. If (HUGE IF!!!) I read of a 12 year old who was 5'10", that's on the skinny part of the bell curve, but it doesn't really define the far right edge. But an 11? It happens that kids hit their growth spurt when they're 12. Not common, but not freakishly rare. But 11? I guess now I'll entertain the possibility that Freddy II is 12 or 13, and Freddy I a normal 14 or a slightly small 15. Which means I'm entertaining the possibility that there's a bit less room for growth in Freddy I's game. Is he really truly ooly 5'10"? Man, he *is* playing the wrong sport.
Yeah, my best friend in 6th grade was 6'2''; he played in goal. Come to think of it, he was also an exceptional student, and he was born across town,,,,,,,there's no way. So now I've come to the inevitable conclusion that my best pal in grade school was in actuality a 26- year old grad student, working on a thesis on child-development. How could have I been so blind?
That does seem feakishly huge for an 11 year old. But what I want to know, and this effects me directly--what is the growth potential for a 5'9" 30 year old?
Amazing People Hmmm, funny, one of my best friends in school was also the tallest kid in 6th grade and was also an exceptional student. (He went onto grad school in engineering and now works for Microsoft.) Guess what! Even though he was 12 -- not 11 -- he was no taller than Fredua is now, about 5' 10". (He's now a 6' 6" adult.) Guess what! Even though he was damn smart, he was at his own grade level. Guess what! He couldn't really move -- like every other really tall kid in existence. Guess what! It's not only skeptical me who is in disbelief on this subject. It is every authority in existence. You think the Adus play 3 years up in soccer only because they're good? (Which they are, for sure. But they weren't the first good players ever to hit USSF, and you sure as hell didn't see Beasley & Donovan playing 3 years up.) Nope. USSF is worried that the birthdate thing will bite it so it's playing things safe by building a big cushion of safety into where it places the Adus. You think the Adus are 2 years up in school because they're Doogie Howser I and II? No, it's because the schools figured, what the hell, they're good students and they're probably older than their classmates anyway, so let's move them up. Talk is cheap, but actions are meaningful. USSF and the school system told you what they think through their actions.
Some people grow early. I think I was 5'10" in sixth grade. My doctor predicted about 6'6" or 6'7" for me at that point, but I ended up at 6'3".
Ahhh...so you are younger than you actually think you are. And you thought you could get away with it.
Re: 5' 10" One of the kids I coach on my U12 team is 5'10'' and always has is pass double checked, along with comments made by opposing coaches and parents.
Re: 5' 10" Right. A rare occurrence indeed. We had a 5' 4" U10 player. Turned 10 years old right after the August 1st date. Saw dozens of U10 teams, he was always bigger than any of the opposition. Was about 5' 7", 5' 8" as an 11 year old, again bigger than any U11s that his team ever encountered. He doesn't play anymore. Kid has bad knees; doctor says that's from growing so fast at such an early age. Doctor was quite concerned about the boy's height, and regarded it as both highly unusual and a medical concern.
Hate to be the first to tell you but the only thing that will get bigger is your pants size form here on out
