Even more depressing is scrolling down this thread from the start and looking at lots of people I miss.
The average fan of United probably wasn't alive when this thread began or wasn't aware of the championship in 2004. Meanwhile, I'm probably one of the few on this board who wasn't alive when the Bullets won their championship.
The irony of this thread is clearly the team going on to win the title in 2004. Needless to say, that’s not happening this year. We do seem to be catching Charlotte at an opportune time for USOC (losers of 5 straight against MLS sides and needing extra time against NCFC to advance in the Cup) but I’m certainly not getting my hopes up about advancing.
How can they feel doom at the point they do in the season yet DC United still wins a MLS Cup? I've been feeling doom for at least 15 years straight but there has been no MLS Cup. Have I not been doomy enough?
United fell to 2-3-3 the night this thread was started. 9 points in 8 games. 1.125 ppg. Even after enduring the 2000 season dropoff and years of mediocre seasons between, 1.125 ppg was setting people over the edge 21 years ago this month. The recent numbers: 2020: 0.91 2021: 1.38 2022: 0.87 2023: 1.18 2024: 1.18 2025: 1.00
Maybe that's the answer. Maybe DC United will become relevant again if we develop and release the right virus.
Christian Gomez didn’t sign until August 2004 if you believe Wikipedia. That explains the doom-before-Cup sentiment.
We retained something this year? Or are you suggesting that we haven’t performed so atrociously so as to have the league confiscate a trophy from the team store?
We kept the Coffee Pot Cup Other than the USOC trophy itself, the most important trophy around. (at least in trophies we have some sort of shot at).
Genuinely disappointed in myself for needing this reminder after hyping the Coffee Pot Cup up so much.
