I used to live in Tampa and after I left my boys (the mutiny)got axed. For the past year I have been living in Korea so I got to see some wicked hot games like the US Korea/Poland and Germany. I really really miss MLS though. Can anyone give me any tips on the area and exactly what it takes to see a game... remember I'll be in Monterey, not San Jose.... Thank you for all of your help!!!!!!!!! Amanda
I'm pretty sure Jeff Adams lives in Monterey. And makes it to almost all games. The distance between San Jose and Monterey is no greater (I think less) than between San Jose and Sacto and we have fans that come from farther than that. Shouldn't be any problem for you. You got to be at the US-Mexico game; you were blessed.
The commute between Monterey and San Jose is nothing by California standards. You have no excuse not to be at every home match.
Right, ss. Did I mention I have talked to fans who come down to the games from the Nevada side of Tahoe? That's loyal.
i might end up at the presido of monterrey for a year. i dont think im gonna be going to quakes games, though. no, i know im not going to be going to quakes games, unless its to see columbus do some winning. itd be just too hard to watch games in that awful stadium (amongst other reasons)
amandamilligan, you know the way....Own Goal Hat-Trick--just stay there and lock yourself in your room.
Other soccer options in Monterey... In addition to the foregone conclusion of coming to every Quakes game from Monterey (it's only 78 miles to Spartan, about 1 hour and 15 minutes), there is actually a pretty good college program (NAIA) now at Cal State Monterey Bay as well. What is the best thing about soccer there is the fields. I've never seen a nicer surface to play soccer on. The fields are like golf greens. It's like the soccer equivalent of the field of dreams. You expect Pele to step out of the cornfield (well, ice plant) and start juggling. In fact, a few months ago Johann Cruyff (yes, THE Johann Cruyff) ran a coaching clinic there as a side activity when he was in the Monterey area for a golfing holiday. The soccer may not be top flight level, but you gotta go and at least check out the fields!
Not far at all Welcome to Monterey, and welcome to DLI. My wife and I live in Monterey, and we have been to every match at Spartan for several years now. Everyone's right. Spartan Stadium is only 75 miles north, so it's not a bad ride. We live just down Franklin Street from DLI, and usually go in groups. Also, for international/world soccer, the Britannia Arms English Pub (downtown on Alvarado) has a 8ft. screen and always show the games! Again, welcome.
yeah, and lots of fans, and a pitch that lacks a crown and is regulation width - if i am at the presido, ill likely be at that pub. a lot. especially if the training is as stressful as im thinking that it may be.
Yes, very soon now I'll be moving away from this putrid valley of traffic, noise, illegal foreigners and liberals and moving up to an area of gun loving rednecks who grow their own and have no use for the government.I'll still be coming down for the games though, what's the big deal about a three hour drive?
Make sure you stock up on a lot of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline CDs to listen to on that long trip!! And, take the gun rack out of the '53 Dodge pickup before you leave.
I miss SOCCER The schooling is gonna be tough, I just gotta make sure I have an outlet and soccer is an easy one. I love to play (just ok) and I can't wait to harass Yallop and Kinnear (I used to work with the mutiny). One of my friends from back in the day plays for the Crew... So one Hat Trick, we'll have to chat Does anyone know where the hell Cle Kooiman is? Thanks! Amanda
HEY!! We have seats too! They're expensive. But there are seats!! The only thing Columbus fans will miss in San Jose is the wannabe-hooligan, drunken thieves!
Re: DLI I guess that kinda depends on what language you're going for. I've heard the coursework is challenging because it's immersive, but fun and interesting. Everyone I know that's gone had an absolute blast. I've got a chance to go, as well, but I think I'm going to turn it down.
Re: I miss SOCCER Amanda, Make sure you find a soccer-loving friend or two and make it to the ClubQuake tailgate before the games. People start showing up around 4 for the 7 pm games (well, some people show up earlier I'm told...) and a great time is had by all. Lotsa good food and drink and friendly people. Go to www.clubquake.org for info. It's a great way to meet people and drink other people's beer. I drive down from San Francisco to all the games and the tailgate makes the trip totally worth the extra miles.
We're all thinking she wants to be a Quakes fan. But check out what she's telling the Galaxy boards: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25697 Yikes! My biggest tip for you Amanda: You can't be both a Quake fan and a Galaxy fan. Just doesn't happen!
You seriously think that after meeting me, Defender, Beerking, Nap and Albany58 she could ever cheer for the Laxatives? Wait, don't answer that.
