There have been reports that the Hunt family have been looking to sell the Crew. There hasn't been any potential groups reported yet. Here is a link to the article http://www.massivereport.com/2012/10/19/3527764/hunt-sports-group-looking-to-sell-crew
On Saturday, Fiosfan also linked a story on this topic from the Columbus Dispatch. That story had an interesting bit:
We need to get away from having ownerships with multiple teams though. It's a throwback towards times of less stability within the league. While I respect the Hunts and AEG for what they did for the league, the time is now that they get this problem rectified so that the league can move forward with greater strength. We've seen what new ownerships can do in KC when they can commit the time and resources to one team and are local and understand their markets. Columbus seems the more sensible of the two teams that the Hunts own to let go of. The late Lamar Hunt will always be remembered for inaugurating the soccer specific stadium and that idea is one that has made the league's current success possible. Therefore Crew Stadium is a monument to that success, but it's just time. That's why I think that this pause in expansion til 2016 is so important. This is a time for the multiple ownerships of the Hunts and AEG to be settled; and for the stadium situations of New England, DC, and Chivas to be sorted out. This has to happen before the next expansion cycle begins. This is the time to get these things done once and for all.
Oh don't get me wrong as I definitely agree! Its just a sentimental thing for me as Lamar Hunt and his family were/are one of the main and/or major contributors to the game of soccer in this country and I thought its a little sad to see them leave.
There's nothing much to say that those issues can't be resolved at the same time as expanding though. The stadium issues are entirely unrelated to any further expansions and anyone interested in buying out the Crew are probably going to be local and not interested in putting their money elsewhere anyway.
That's rather interesting. Not very often you see an ownership group in any sport contradict their commissioner so publicly. I bet that was a rather awkward exchange between the Hunts and Garber the past few days.
I was thinking about renewing my season tickets when I saw this. I don't know if the crew will be around next year, so maybe I'll hold on to my money and just buy on a game to game basis... See why the Hunts squashed this news ASAP? Garber really needs to check media credentials before he spouts off on league matters. Rumors and innuendo fly around mls faster than you can say NY Cosmos.
Has Baby Gerber finally proven to everyone that he is just a puppet? I mean the guy is supposed to be the commissioner of the league so shouldn't he know about these things instead of talking out of his hat?
Whoa hold on there, selling a team has absolutely no relation to its financial stability or lack therof. the Crew are not going anywhere for a long time. The hunts are in no hurry, if it takes years for them to sell their stake, that's what it'll take.
My neighbor's barber's bartender mentioned that CLB is considering self-relegating and playing in the NASL next year so they can get some games in against the Cosmos and MLS can run an 18-team league that is easier to schedule.
Every KC Chiefs fan everywhere just laughed. Your best bet is to hope that Clark strikes gold with a management team, because he really can't be bothered with all that pesky day-to-day team running stuff.
Seriously. And as far as "resources" are concerned, FCD is in the top third of MLS payrolls almost every year. The fact that results haven't been better is down to something, but that something isn't money.
When is the last time a financially stable franchise moved without long running pre-existing issues playing a role?
Or that there's not a difference of opinion between the Hunts and Garber regarding the urgency of getting rid of multi-team ownership.
