Put Mourinho with Almeria, and he would also suck. Managing an all-star team will help back up your arrogance.

Mourihno won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League with Porto. Porto, is a Portuguese giant, but is not a European giant.

Managing an all-star team is a double edge sword.

Just a few years ago, Chelsea was just a scrub team that had not done anything of significance in 50 years. Money doesn't buy championships, but what it can do is put you in a position to win championships more often than not.

if the Abu Dhabi group is serious about their football operations in the premiership, this season will not matter. They could be relegated at the end of the season, they will rise and become a contender. On paper, they make Chelski look like a welfare case. Roman bought Chelsea in 2003 and by 2005 they won the league title.

Look at Pachuca, they were relegated TWICE before they could settle themselves in Mexico's first division. Once they set the foundation for their footballing operations, the results speak for themselves.

Man City will be a contender before you know it

Man City speak a great deal but I dont see any action.

First move would be to hire a big time manager.

Second would be to spend those 200 million + pounds they said they would.

They're one of the biggest teams in Portugal, and unlike Almeria, Porto can afford a couple of players with above average talent. Almeria on the other hand can only afford average players and hope they excel playing as a team.

True that to some extent. When you're on top everybody loves you, but when you lose you're the crappiest manager because you can't win with all those great players. However, that world class talent makes your job much easier.

I am aware of Porto's place and legacy in and outside of Portugal, but that is not the point. My point is that Jose Mourinho did not need a Chelsea to toot his own horn or as you would put it, back up his arrogance. Relatively speaking, Porto is a modest club outside its borders. What he did with Porto has more merit than what Frank Rijkard did with Barza.

Tell that to Vicente del Bosque. He had a bad ass team that played for the team. When the FO decided to adopt their policy of hiring the galaxy's best players, that when it went downhill. When you have superstars on the bench, there will be problems.

Not saying that America is an elite club in the world, but remember a couple seasons ago when America tried to pull a Real Madrid and get Pepino Cuevas, Martin Vouso, etc and the press was always wondering why Blanco, Piojo lopez, Pepino Cuevas, Martin Vouso, Salvador Cabanas, etc were not all on the field at the same time.....

I wouldnt say it is easier...

Here we go again with history of other coaches that has nothing to do with Hugo at Almeria, Like Sid says keep it on the subject, have you guys checked out what Hugo has to work with? Solari, Alves, Piatti their good up front but they don't have good defenders thats probably why they get scored on I see Galindo and Salcido or Orsorio filling in the back positions but most of all they need a center back badly

Mouriño quit Benfica just after a couple months because the directors wouldn't listen to his demands

Hopefully Hugo takes some players that play in Mexico. We need to make up for Pavel's return to Mexico.

No, case in point: Tony Adams, Paul Ince, Benjamin Galindo, Daniel Brailovski, etc.

It seems like some of the better managers are the guys who weren't successful players:

Wenger played mostly as an amateur.

Alex Ferguson was the top scorer in the Scottish league one season but I dont think he was ever called up to represent his country.

I don't think Mourinho ever played professionally.

Rafa Benitez spent his short lived playing career in Spain's lower divisions.

Scolari didn't accomplish much as a player either.

Thats not to say great players can't be great managers, because there are plenty. I think you just need to have that mental edge which Hugo seems to have.
