Hugo Sanchez considered by many the best Mexican player of all time had his best years in a foreign country while, as far as I can remember, he was never really favored by his country of origin.
I remembered back in the 70's when Hugo had just started his career and he came to play in the US for the old San Diego Sockers (may be wrong on the name) he clearly showed he had talent, yet he was never considered to play in wc 78 where Mexico had a disastrous performance. I remember clearly the commentator saying in one of the games (Tony Tirado?) Where is Hugo Sanchez? I don't think he even made the roster. I lost track of his career after he left the US but this is one of the many incidents where he was just brushed aside and was never given the opportunity he deserved in his own country.

the poing is that Hugo is hated by too many of his own people. The sad thing is that a lot of Mexicans are cangrejos, way too many.!

I am not suggesting that Hugo is not liked in Mexico. In fact, he is an idol, but during his playing career especially in wc competitions I don't think he was given the chance to play consistently and become in his own country the best Mexican player. If he was truly revered as the best Mexican player ever why is it that in wc 94 he was warming the bench when he should've been a starter in all the games? The best Mexican player ever warming the bench?

i heard that in wc 94 he had some kind of conflict with the coach. i also believe he should of been a started on wc 94. The only thing left for him to do is to become as great a coach as he was a player.

BTW, he won a title with Pumas right before leaving to Spain.

The various reasons are many but its true that Hugo had a unsatisfying and underwhelming national team career.

To those who know off hand... How many caps did he even have?

I'll look... okay 58 according to one site

29 goals in 58 caps statistically is pretty good.

Conflict or no conflict, as the best Mexican player ever he should've been a starter but he wasn't and that's exactly my point that he never got a chance in his own country to prove what he was.

I'd take Hugo Sanchez vintage '86 over Hugo Sanchez '94 any time without hesitation....and that team came pretty darn close in beating West Germany of Rumminigge, Magath, Briegel in the quaterfinals even though they were hosts.

That he's not liked by Mexicans will have more to do with his coaching criticisms of El Tri technico directos of the past 6 years than from his playing days. Aficionados de Real Madrid will certainly remember his many spectacular goals for that club. But i can definately see why some might not like him (ie. non-Pumas supporters).

Hugo made the roster of World Cup 78 and I'm pretty sure in old footage he's shown playing in a game.

If anything the anti-Hugo movement was pretty much non-existent until he started coaching.

His Personality that goes against the grain of most soccer players and coaches in Mexico probably puts people off the most.

Although he did act like a big baby when Mejia Baron didn't put him in WC 94. Even though he's in the right he should of acted more mature and let bygones be bygones instead of throwing a friendship of over 20 years down the crapper hole.

So far, here are the facts:

    WC 78 - Bench warmer
    WC 94- Bench warmer

What this data tells me is that he was considered good enough to warm the bench but not the best player that so many people now say that he was.

Hugo Sanchez became the best Mexican player playing in a foreign country with a team like Real Madrid but he was not able to do much of anything playing for the MNT because people like Mejia Baron did not let him.

He is hated because he is a winner......... plain and simple. You earn the right to do what you want, moral and legal relaxation notwithstanding, when you are a winner

The people that sit aside and bytch just aren't up to par.

The FIFA site does have him as a starter in 78. I don't know if that's where you got your information from but as far as I remember I was certain he didn't start the first game against Tunizia or Tunez because Tony Tirado the commentator was asking " where is Hugo?" right before the end of that game when it was clear that Mexico was going to loose. It's been so long ago that I could be wrong.

he might of said "where is Hugo" because Hugo hadnt appeared in the game as much as he would in a regular game.

talent wise hugo sanchez is the maradona of mexico (without the drugs) whether or not he is hated in mexico i can really care less but you have to respect the man for his talent and skill sure people can hate him for his success (which i think is stupid) but they have to respect him both as a player and as a coach. and i think honor is a bunch of bull$hit. in the real world no one cares about honor.

lots of people dont like Hugo cuz he used to talk way too much, specially about lavolpe and la seleccion. Plus, when he said he deserved the NT, he would start talking about how many pichichis he had gotten, and that he played in Real Madrid, etc. Now that he has a championship as a coach, he is going to use it whenever time comes to chose a Coach for the NT.

hey, tico12, you want all Mexicans to be like this with Hugo-----------------------> [IMG]

    just joking.;)

I used a book I have on the world cup and they listed Sanchez as playing every game and all the minutes. I definetely know that Hugo played against Tunisia because I remember and interview with him where he was complaining that he endend defending as a central defender against the team and Roca said it wasn't true.

    Nice post mexicano>
In my search for Hugo's statistics, I found an interesting but rather sketchy story. 4 games before the end of the Spanish tournament Hugo needed three goals to establish (or tie) some kind of record. He was unjustly suspended for three games (so he couldn't score those three goals). Well, on the last game he came back and scored the three goals he needed. Way to go Hugo!
I guess when one suceeds in life, there is always somebody who doesn't like it, as butters indicates on his post.
Does anybody know a little more about this story?
