here's rough translation from one of reputable russian papers:

21-02-2003 Well-known football players Hristo Stoichkova can plant(put) in prison the Sofia tax service has threatened known Bulgarian football player Hristo Stoichkovu to submit the case to prosecutor's office if that till February, 24 will not pay a duty constituting about(near) 68 thousand levov (about(near) $40 thousand) . If it will take place, under current laws to the player of a command(team) of North American professional football league (MLS) " Dee - Si JUnajted ", living at the moment in USA, threatens three years of prison. Besides the tax service is going to notify boundary authorities of the country that in case of arrival Stoichkova Bulgaria, at him(it) have withdrawn the passport for travel abroad. Two weeks back Stoichkov were accused of unpaid taxes with bonus which it(he) has received for an output(exit) of modular Bulgaria in a final stage of the world championship on football in France in 1998. To the malicious defaulter it was given two weeks to settle all problems with tax service, however it it was made not. Besides, three attempts to hand Stoichkovomu logovuju the declaration have not crowned success. It is remarkable, that triumpher Mundialja of 1994 in USA when the combined team of Bulgaria for the first time in the history has won bronze medals of the main football event chetyrehletija, - the unique football player of combined team whom the tax has not paid. All other members of a national command(team), including youth combined team, according to to the check made in 2000, have paid with the state on all duties. On it reports RIA "News".

So...I guess he's not going back. How do you think this will affect his Green Card application etc. I know we're not exactly living in Switzerland here.

I think the national team needs new uniforms.

I'm more curious how this shapes up behind the scenes politically. Did he pass up coming back to play and/or coach some local club owned by a well connected mob figure?

    Slanderous.

Only 1/3 of the Bulgarian economy is from goat farming. The bulk is cigarette smuggling and weapons sales to terrorists. Let's hope Hristo isn't involved in any of that......

Get with the times, man. Bulgaria is our most trusted ally and the vanguard of the 'new Europe'. According to the official position of the United States Government, it is now France and Germany whose economies are goat farming, cigarette smuggling, and weapons sales to terrorists.

As the roster currently stands, there's room for him as a Senior International, IIRC. Someone correct this if it's wrong, but I think DC United's internationals are classified as follows:

SI - Senior Internationals (3 max): Ivanov, Nelsen, Stoichkov
GC - Green Card: Reyes, Etcheverry, Kovalenko
TI - Transitional Internationals: Quintanilla, Alegria
