Thanks for doing these, PVancouver. Not only are they interesting to look at now, but it will also be something good to look at toward the end of the year to see who has improved and who had good years and bad years, without having to think really hard or go back and look at video. Keep it up.

And for the fun of it, I'll try to keep a running tally of who gets the most "7"s.
    Cunningham 1
    Herdsman 1
    Busch 1
    Elliott 1
    Marshall 1
Fidlerre- do you have the April 3 player ratings archived somewhere?

eventually i am going to set it up so that each week a "on-going" chart is made...listing each weeks rankings so you can compare. but i just have not had the time yet.

Paul is rapidly becoming indispensible for Crew fans.

I'm also glad to see him say that Hejduk had a great game for the US. I thought so too and couldn't believe the buttwads who are complaining about him.

Just one thing though re: the Crew ratings:

If you just read through them without knowing anything about the game, it would sure sound like we won. So the question I have is - if all these guys played such sterling matches, why didn't we win?

That's a good question. Obviously, it only takes converting on one or two chances to win in the funny game of soccer. The Crew pulled out a few victories like that last year. As far as player ratings go, the Crew offense is still averaging about a 4. For this game they averaged about a 5. When they average about a 6, then the Crew will score goals.

    Thanks for the support.

A new personal favorite for me, the comment about Duncan Oughton:

Uncharacteristically inactive. I'm not sure if that is a plus or a minus.

    It's definitely a plus.

Why We Didn't Win, Part II...

Apparently, we were playing a pretty good team...

Game Grades: Columbus Crew Wash Out

I wish we had Buzz Carrick in Columbus writing practice reports like these...

Great column from Steve Sirk, though...

    Crew Notebook: Crew v Burn

Duncan Oughton's comments about Tucker Walther were hilarious. And so were Tucker's comments about Duncan.

As for Cunningham's comments, he is pretty much dead-on. The Crew offense has been pretty much a one-man show to date. Hejduk provides sparks, Elliott has been huge, and most of the other guys are at least trying, but overall the Crew offense needs to get better.

Most Controversial Comment from Greg Andrulis...

"And Ross just ran out of gas, and with the weather changes, we felt we needed someone who can hit those long-range shots like Ross, and that's Duncan Oughton. I thought Duncan did a very good job in that situation."

That's why Ross Paule and Duncan Oughton are on the field???? I'm glad Greg spelled it out, because I never would have come to that conclusion on my own. While Paule has a total of four shots and two shots on goal (two shots, one on frame in this game), Oughton hasn't taken a single shot in 218 minutes. And the Crew might be better for it.

    Shots on Goal...

Cunningham has taken 9 shots, 3 on goal (leads Crew in shots)
Ralph has taken 20 shots, 5 on goal
Ruiz has taken 17 shots, 12 on goal
Kovalenko has taken 5 shots, 5 on goal

Good stuff Paul. I enjoy reading it and wonder why the Dispatch doesn't pay you for match reports, etc.

The only question I have from this past game is by the ref. Shouldn't he have at least gotten a "bad play" point attributed to him for not allowing the final corner kick?

I didn't think it was a bad call. Due to Dallas' attacking play, time was called at the 93:17 mark in a game where 3:00 minutes of stoppage time had been awarded. Since most corner kicks do not result in scores, I don't have any problems with not having the corner kick taken. I certainly don't believe there should be a "the ball must be in play to call time" rule. Oddly enough, yesterday our rec league ref ended the first half the same way, calling time before a corner kick could be taken. The difference was our ref stunk!

For what it's worth, the MLS Referee committee says the ref got the "handling" call correct.

The video clip distributed from last weekend’s DAL-CLB game, a DAL player heads a ball onto goal. The shot is on its way into the goal when it hits a defender’s shoulder. The defender is standing on the goal line. The ball bounces off the player’s shoulder up to the crossbar. The ball quickly comes down off the crossbar and strikes the player’s arm. The play happens so quickly and it is so difficult to determine if the ball was going in off the crossbar, the official was correct not to award a penalty and or send-off. The handball was deemed not intentional, and the referee was complemented on his decision.
