http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/videos...rds-adidas-golden-glove-nominees-2403745.html I guess his 16 saves against Belgium weren't enough to get him nominated. I know he didn't have any clean sheets, but that was more a function of mistakes on his back line than his own performance.
There is an unwritten rule that only players on teams that at least make the quarterfinals qualify for individual awards. Note that USA made the quarters in 2002 when Donovan won the Young Player Award.
I don't think he was snubbed. The others gave up fewer goals. And Howard didn't have great games in our first two matches.
I'm not sure total goals allowed has to be a big part of it. I do agree that he wasn't particularly great in the first two games. He wasn't bad either though.
No Ochoa and no Howard as possibilities? That is total crap. Yet another reason to burn FIFA's HQ to the ground with them all locked inside.
Agree 100%. Navas and Neuer have been lights out this World Cup. Navas is single handily the reason CR made it as far as they did. Neuer is just the best in the world and continues this cup. Admittedly he hasn't had to do a ton but he has made some great sweeper keeper plays and great saves. Quality over quantity. I don't agree with Romero but if you get to the finals you get the nominations. Ochoa and Howard's big games involved lots of shots right at them....lets be honest. The top GK in the EPL every year is never on a team who gets scored on a lot or has to make a ton of saves. Winners get the awards. Big saves in big games is the key. 2 keepers in the finals seems fair
And he made no saves in the last three rounds of the tournament. If you want to be on the Best XI, get to the quarterfinals at least, semifinals at best.
I was more a little shocked and thought he might get at least the bronze glove for breaking the record of most saves and it might have put him over Navas. But in the end, when your team doesn't make at least the quarterfinals, a player rarely gets nominated.
Serious question: has there ever been a World Cup All Star player from a non-quarterinalist? (Obviously the winner of this award would make the Best XI.) edit: Looking back, I guess it does seem to happen once in a blue moon.
16 saves .... 16 saves .... blah blah blah, 16 saves!!! Most of those were weakly struck or right at him.
Most saves any keeper makes can be dismissed that way, especially given the standard you appear to be using. But if you save more shots than any keeper in any recorded World Cup game ever, I'd say there's a strong possibility that you made more quality saves than the overwhelming majority of keepers ever make in a game of that magnitude.
Actually, according to the ridiculous Castrol Index, Howard did not even make the top 10 list of keepers. On the other hand, apparently he was he was #1 according to OPTA (which is probably an equally ridiculous rating system).
The Castrol Index has been notably bad for this tournament. But, in fairness, I haven't been looking at it all that closely for the last couple years, so it may have been notably bad then too.
