I don't know if I'm happy about this or not......
I'll have to think about it.

Same here, great we have Timmy for possibly three more years but how big of a cap hit will this be?

Come on, he deserves it. He is the greatest Metro ever and the most consistant.

See thats my problem......I think he is a great keeper....but, I don't consider him the greatest metro ever and certainly not the most consistent.

Once again, I will reserve judgement. I want to see him play behind Pope for a full season...see if he pisses me off with soft goals with a real defense in front of him.

It's not that bad a cap hit when you cut Addo, Balboa & Andy Williams.

bingo. We have a winner. With all these young kids that Bradley drafted, it'll even itself out.

... and replace them with three guys under 20 years old that will contribute almost nothing to the team this year.

I'm just saying that even though I like T-Ho and he's probably the best goalie in MLS (and a great Metro deserving a big paycheck), we need to keep enough cap space available to acquire some decent offensive players. There are a lot more cheap, serviceable goalies in the US than cheap goal scorers.

Howard is a great shot stopper. He better work on his distribution to earn his league max.

Huh. You learn something new each day.

Let's also remember that Timmy is not only the MVP of the team (IMHO), but has also worked hard in the community. He represents Metro with class.

This is one of the smartest moves MLS has made. The league needs to hold onto a marquee goaltender or two, rather than watching them all jump ship to England like Keller and Friedel. I know when I watch hockey, my main focus is on the man between the pipes. It is his game, his win or his loss.
A cap hit for Metro, maybe. But for the good of the league, it is absolutely essential

Isn't this the last year of both Mathis & Pope's contract? I think Mathis is gone after this year (his choice), and Pope probably is as well. I believe both are "max" salary.

We don't have basketballs Salary cap....and I don't think its a 'bad' move....I'm just not sure if I would have tied up that kind of salary on a keeper....

Listen, if we didn't have this guy than all the changes in the world wouldn't amount to anything. We should be greatful he's on our team.

I think Nick Rimando at DC is the best keeper in the league, but Tim Howard is right up there.

    Damien Silvera. Remember him?

How can you forget him?! Used to ****************** people up just by looking at them. The "Evil Eye" they called it.

Wasn't he on his way to becoming President of the United States until that dude with the power to see peoples' futures went out to assassinate him, but spoiled the bid when Damien held a child up to shield himself from the bullets? It was all over the papers.

    That's the guy, right?

Vizzerdrix remains my favorite BigSoccer newbie. T-Ho's cheaper than an NBA player - amen! Preach on!

$300,000k may be a bit much for a goalkeeper in this league.

But when you remember that Howard made up for our many, many, many, many, many defensive deficiencies, $300,000 for a keeper and the equivalent of 2 defensemen is not bad.

If we had a better defense, we could go for a cheaper goalie. But until Timmy touches the ball less than 3 times a game, he's a keeper.

    You guys amaze me sometimes

This is just grand. First you love him. All of a sudden Timmy's making too much money as a keeper, so now you say screw em.

Sometimes I wonder what some of you guys think.
Scoring goals is one way of winning the game, the other is making sure your #1 Keeper stops the goals going into our net. Cheap quality or Top Quality, it shouldn't matter.

Oh but then again I forgot most off you expected Timmy to take the next plane to Europe and forget us. Did it happen? No. Timmy wants to stay and play for Metro. Till his new contract expiers we shall see what happens.

I'm taking the $300,000 figure with a big grain of salt.

Doesn't seem likely Howard's agent asked for the league max and MLS gave him more, especially since Howard trained in Europe this off season and didn't have the leverage of a contract offer in hand.

It also doesn't seem likely they'd pay more for his potential than they're paying for players who've actually made some noise on the international stage.

It could be this figure is accurate. I'm just doubting that it is.

Bigfoot, I'm not saying the $300k figure is correct, but a number of guys (can you say MLS Strike Force) play for above League Max. The max figure, $270, is only what they count against the cap.

Yeah but those guys are established international players and Howard isn't yet.

Howard's career so far would be comparable to Joe Cannon's rather than any fixture on the US National Team.

Here's what MLS Insider had to say about the situation last week:
MLS would not meet Cannon's salary request of around $100,000 a year so $300,000 a year for Howard seems a little steep to me.

Would you have called Josh Wolff "a nationanl team fixture" prior to last year's World Cup when he signed his new deal? How about a guy like Jason Kreis, or Ante Razov? What do you think those guys make? Howard has been MLS Keeper of the Year two years in a row, and to the guys who are doing the contracts (read: League Officials), that means quite a bit. If what I heard Wolff is making (more than $300k) is correct, I bet the NYT figure for Howard is accurate.
