wrong....he cannot be expected to come through 5-6 players for a ball coming in head high at 45%....SAF has it right ...you have it wrong...

We won't know if Fergie really blames Howard or not until the team for Saturday's game is announced.

O.K.....your old fashioned....put a man on the post and he is joined by 5 chelsea players, all on side.....if Van Der Saar was the answer then it's a dumb question...the bloke is very average....my enduring memory of him is at the WC 98....Holland conceeded, what six goals ?...five of them went through Van Der Saars legs....

TH should have come for that ball.
He's seems to be lacking confidence and that's probably why he stayed rooted on his line.

    Just a former keeper's opinion.

How good are you? Manchester United are in desperate need of a new goalkeeper and you sound like you could give our two current keepers a run for their money. :)

Having seen Seaman beaten every other week by similar crosses, I'd say this.

It was a great ball in, good enough to deceive both the attackers and defenders, as none got a touch on it, so singling out Howard for blame is unfair, although the fact that he's about 2 foot behind his line as the ball crosses it is of concern...

Imagine Lehmann in goal in a similar scenario. He'd have come storming off his line, and missed the cross totally, only for Terry to get the easiest of tap ins at the far corner. Cue hearty laughs at our keepers lack of ability. Howard was damned if he did and damned if he didn't

I think Howard should have claimed that. We know that his handling of crosses is not up to scratch, but this was just a yard or so ahead, he should have held it. He seemed short of confidence. Rio going towards the ball might have decieved him, but in a case where it's either the keeper or the CB to hit it clear (especially when the CB has an opponent breathing down his neck and is running toward his own goal), the 'keeper should always make the shout and go grab the ball. Tim doesn't seem to have good command of his area.

I watched the clip of that goal last night, yes Howard should've been flying up there to the corner and tip or catches or whatever needed to do to keep the ball away ..

Howard attempting to handle that would've been impossible. The ball was not reachable, unless Howard wanted to end up A.) Looking Stupid B.) Colliding w/ own defender. Terry flashing across the 6 knocking Rio over should've kept most keepers on the line.

Howard did the right thing, the Defence yesterday was very lackluster. G. Nev was his usual self, Rio good as always. Heinze did do as well as he should. But Mikael Silvestre does not deserve to start Saturday or Tuesday vs. Arsenal. How many chances does one very fast but blunder-prone defender get?

This is probably why your a former keeper...

In today's game, 9 out of 10 keepers stay on their line. The complete defense screwed up, including Howard. Give credit to Duff for putting in a great ball which put the defense under a lot of pressure.

By the way, who was covering the player who came flying in and almost tipped the ball into the net? Seemed to be a complete breakdown...

He did do something. He held his line because there were 3 unmarked Chelsea players that could have gotten to the ball before him.

He should have came off his line hard and attempt to fight his way through all that traffic. he would have made contact with someone and then he'd of had an excuse. But, then we would be arguing why he made such a stupid decision and come off his line in that mess, it would have been another mistake. The fact is he was playing to react to the ball with at least two chelsea players, bearing down, unmarked on the goal. Let's give Duff some credit on the curling dipping back post cross. One foot to the left and it's wide OR the unmarked Chelsea player gets a touch on the ball and Tims in the perfect position to make the save.....................or does he? Another thread?

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or if you guys even care but...

Tim Howard has started in 5 Carling Cup matches, prior to the 2 goals he gave up in the last Chelsea match, he had 4 shut outs including Arsenal and Chelsea in the mix.

    Crewe 0 -3

    Crystal Palace 0-2

    Arsenal 0-1

    Chelsea 0-0

    Chelsea 2-1

..and yes, I think he could have done something to prevent Duff's goal, but you can't deny his overal Cup performace. I think he should be starting for league games.

Definitely not Timmy's dad, since 66 is just as positive about Spector and Cooper!

unfortunately I am old enough.....just positive...period....really do worry about some of you boys though....had Terry not fouled ?...impeded?...Rio, chances are Rio heads the ball clear...no way is this goal Howards fault...it just isn't....SAF, Giggs and Keane all agree with that opinion....it's on soccernet..

    Re: Video?

It is funny the way some people have that 'unconditional' vibe when it comes to the American players. First of all, even if Howard would have screwed up on the way out, it would have shown some form of effort. Remember, although there were players bearing down on his goal, Howard has the advantage. He can use his hands. Hell, if he had conceded a penalty because he accidentally punched Terry on his mush, it would have been OK. We could have at least lauded his effort. He looked like a deer caught in headlights. He has no confidence whatsoever, and what is more sad is seeing the lot of you make excuses for him time and time again. He is not the answer for ManU's goalie problem. Tim Howard just isn't good enough. These are the type of goalie blunders you guys are used to seeing in MLS, which is probably why so many of you defend it.

Please, no more excuses for Mr. Howard. Seems like all his mistakes cost the team something more than points. (Ex. See last years CL defeat to Porto) Please send him back to NYC.

P.S. Does anyone remember that last-gasp goal he allowed against Southhampton last season? Set piece specialist, I'm sure.

At which point of course the Man U defence would have just sat and watched the Chelsea players load up the back post and do nothing? Cute but ignorant - just like the rest of your posts on here so far

Van Der Saar average? That on its own tells me exactly how much credibility should be paid to your opinion. Not to mention the fact you appear to lack the balls to name the club you support yet feel happy to come on this forum and pontificate.

Seriously - we get enough idiots on these boards as it is without numpties like you doubling the twat factor overnight
