With the likelihood of Tim Howard (the New Jersey Metrostars' starting keeper for those who don't know) moving to Manchester United constantly increasing, and with Joe Cannon likely to come back stateside (Lens' starting keeper has something like eight shutouts in thirteen matches), what are the chances that San Jose trades his rights to the Metrostars? If this indeed occured (the likelihood of which can only be speculated), who would New Jersey trade, and who would we want (be realistic)?
Maybe Craig Ziadie or Jacob LeBlanc (local ties) and/or draft picks. Just glancing at the roster, I don't see a player that we would want or could pry away.
Because MLS did not re-sign Cannon (and since no other MLS side re-signed him), the Quakes still have the rights to him (much like Columbus having to deal for Paule or Chicago for Williams). How tight against the cap are you guys? Would you give up Cannon for cap-relief (like 40-50k worth?)
Just a follow up.....note the last paragraph. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/story/87553p-79796c.html
Personally I wouldn't be inclined to give Cannon up for anything. If Cannon wanted to come back to the States and the Metros were interested in trading for him I'd offer up Onstad instead (yeah, he's having a great year, but he's an SI, he's 35, Cannon is better and he's a crowd favorite). I can't find a link but I believe Cannon has said he won't play for anyone in MLS other than the Quakes.
I don't have a link either. But there is no way Franky is gonna give up Onstad for Cannon. He commented on this in an article somewhere. Something along the lines of Joe left and his career will move on. I'm pretty certain Joe won't be back with the Quakes. But I'd LOVE to see him go to the Metros. Would kinda make up for losing Timmy?
Actually, here's the link. And Franky's comment: "Coach Frank Yallop agreed that Cannon probably won't rejoin the Earthquakes in the near future. ``When you leave, you get your place taken,'' Yallop said. ``We're not going to be making any changes. He'll get on with his career.''
Onstad is an SI? Call me the last one on the bus, but isn't he a Green Card holder due to his marriage to an US citizen. Or are they counting him as an SI. Out of touch so you'll stay in touch, DB
I'm glad the league actually said something about it because some of the articles I've read make an assumption he can just go wherever.
You're not out of touch, Dave. Onstad has a Green Card and doesn't count against our limit of three SIs. We've only got two SIs at the moment, and both are out injured these days (DeRosario, Ekelund).
www.ussocceruk.com/ I think it's in either part 2 or 3 of the interview with one of the staffers at the site...you'll have to go back a bit to find it though.
In addition to the quotes given by sjqf, here's the URL to Soccer365's article on Joe and Frank. For those of you who think Cannon might come back to San Jose. http://www.soccer365.com/US_NEWS/Americans_Abroad/page_93_52327.shtml 'While Cannon admitted that he could return to MLS, Earthquake boss Frank Yallop has declared that a homecoming is not in order. ”When you leave, you get your place taken,” reasoned the coach. “We're not going to be making any changes - He'll get on with his career.”'
Im not sure exactly what the 'Quakes would want from the Metros at this point. I cant see anything on their roster thats appealing and yet doable.
Oh God... Ugh. I'm gonna try to not write another 483 expletive-riddled posts in response to this. Suffice to say it ********* me the ************ off. Bring Cannon back, and let him fight with Onstad for the starting job. Onstad is 35. Or at least make it appear that we value Cannon. Wouldn't that be a stronger position from which to negotiate? If Pat Onstad is more valuable to the Quakes than Joe Cannon - [pulling fist-sized shrapnel from intestines sound]Uuggghhh[pulling fist-sized shrapnel from intestines sound]- then how about trading him for Joey DiGiamarino and Jeff Moore? Moore's status with the Metros is probably similar to Cannon's with the Quakes.
Re: Oh God... Calm down there dear. Would you like to tell me what exactly it is that we would do with FOUR keepers? Joe chose to leave. As Franky said, his career will move on and has moved on. Joe made a choice. And now he's got some more choices to make. He'll be okay. He's a big boy who can do what he thinks is best for him.
Re: Re: Oh God... Response A: piss them off to France. Response B: How do you get four keepers out of Cannon, Onstad, Conway, and Saunders? I count two, maybe two-and-a-half total. Response C:Go "Chummin' with Jon Conway" at the first annual San Jose Earthquakes "Fishin' at the Farallons" Day. I'm sure you don't want me to continue.
Remember, folks, that part of the reason Cannon left was monetary. Why would the Quakes be able to sign him for anymore right now? NY/NJ would have money to spend if Howard actually leaves.
Because A: The Quakes supposedly scratched up a suitable amount, but too late. So they had the money. And B: The Quakes also lost Wade Barret, Ariel Graziani, Jimmy Conrad, Devon Barclay and Luchi Gonzales then replaced them all with cheaper players.
