I'd say it's been a good season, with all the games we had we still managed to finish 5th. The cup runs were good and I would of hoped that'd we'd win one of them. What are your thoughts on our 06/07 season?
All in all, it was a great season, only failing to get to the final of the uefa cup stands out for me. We where more than capable of winning those games, it was such a shame.
Good season. Dismal start, but great finish. Wonderful cup runs and nailing 5th in the Premiership--again--has to be seen as a very strong accomplishment. Plus, the team that knocked us out of the UEFA Cup seems to have done pretty well, in the UEFA Cup Finals, in contention to win La Liga, and their Spanish cup too. That's a top team there. Considering we lost our central cog, Carrick, we knew there would be adjustments to be made. Realizing that Ledley missed a massive amount of games is a serious setback. Introducing 5 or 6 new starters will always throw chemistry right out the window, and it did. There were adjustment periods, etc., and we fell far behind out of the gate. Kudos to Jol for keeping the team motivated and working together ... and keeping morale high. These set the stage for a comeback that many other clubs, like Newcastle, were unable to make. We'll bring in new players this season, but fewer starters I think. Was this the best of seasons, no, we missed the CL by a wide margin. Although 8 points may not seem like a wide margin, we were never much closer. Easily we can win 3 more games next season, that's not even a question. This season saw improvements and ultimatley the only knock on us would be that we finished with less points ... despite the same spot in the table. More astutely, we secured Europe for next season, won a lot of games in Europe and in Cups, all bringing in money for the club. We showed that Spurs are a top team in and out of England. Good season. Next year, win a trophy, and try our darndest to break into the CL spots. -Digital
i'm already on record in stating that we've had a good season, so i won't go on about it again. but i will take a second to point out we had far too many disappointments to consider it a great season. two rough patches (one of which was at the very start of the season) where we dropped alot of points, and being knocked out of all three cups after having held leads in the tie (two-goal leads in two of them!) kept us from doing all we reasonably could.
The team sucked. Our defense sucked, our best player was injured for god knows how long, and to top it all off, we didn't win a single trophy. Yeah, like I'm renewing my ********ing season ticket. ********ing twats. Oh, I'm sorry. This isn't the Newcastle forum? Carry on then.
I rate it as a good season. As a new addition to the YID army I didn't have much to use excpet how well they played last year the the food poisoning incident.
I rate it as a good season. I'm very pleased we pulled out another top 5 finish, but I think we're showing top 4 potential and I think we're all hungry for it.
7/10. Poor, slow start but a great finish. Championship form in the last 12 games, but Coca-Cola Champioship form in the first 5 or 6. European campaign was ultimately disappointing, given the manner of the defeat. For me it will be forever tainted with "what if...": the referee didn't give the penalty, did see the Navarro headbutt, did see the Navarro elbow, the Poulsen stamp, what if Steed had been inside the post slicing out instead of outside slicing in. Just a lot of annoyances that really should have been the other way round to the reality. Some great games along the way though, Slavia Prague, Brugges, Besiktas (i loved this game..), Leverkusen, Dinamo, the Feyenoord fiasco. Good times and more next year. Decent cup runs domestically both turning on an injury. Berbatov going off in the first leg of the Gooner game really cost us, the change in formation from a winning tactic to one that gave them the advantage.. and Berbatov going off in the Chelsea cup game, I know he was carrying a knock but again it changed the shape of the side and ultimately we went out of both in added time (extra time in the Arsenal one and a replay in the Chelsea one). More what ifs there too. League form was patchy until christmas, but some sensational wins and performances. Some narrow defeats and some bad defeats (Arsenal away, Man Utd home - turning on Ronaldo's dive, and Everton at home). But once everyone realised what the others were capable there was some beautiful football and a lot to be positive about. Speaking of positives: Dimitar Berbatov, sublime at times but anonymous at others. Slowly that worked its way out of his game and he became a threat in every game. Robbie Keane's goalscoring form. The return of the King at the back, and Michael Dawson's maturity throughout the season. The odd mistake from Dawson, Robinson, Chimbonda, Malbranque and of course Ghaly at the end but overall they weren't *that* costly. Lots to build on again, more positives next season. Negatives: Disappointed with Aaron Lennon, perhaps it's that second season syndrome where everyone knows who you are and goes out to shut you down. Plus he was on the left a lot of the time. Also disappointed with Mido and Ghaly, the odd bit of good but overall a real waste of talent. One of them can't stay fit enough to play and the other one goes from sublime to ridiculous in one game - topped off with an incredibly stupid show of disrespect. I don't expect either of the Egyptians to be around come next August. Overall a positive season, again. Could have been much better but it's testament to how far the club has come that I feel disappointed by 2 quarter finals and 1 semi final. 5th place again is fine. The next step is a big one. £50m to get from 14th to 5th and then another £50m to get from 5th to 4th I fear. But a lot of the investment is already there. Turn some draws into wins, sort out the defensive frailties and Spurs will be a force. It's obvious the talent is there, the fans are fantastic, the ground is a fortress at times and scoring goals clearly is not a problem. Half the battle won right there... now, just stop them going in the other end!!
Not to browbeat what was essentially a good season but I have to say Robbo had a terrible season... very lacking in the clean sheet department, some bad positioning and letting stuff in he should be stopping. Granted, defensively we were miserable particularly on set pieces but that goes back to him as well to organize and position the defense. Perhaps a post World Cup funk... let's hope he finds his true form again. It's strange to think that only 9 more pts.(only 4 more than last season) would've put us in 3rd! The terrible start and some poor results against teams like Fulham, Sheffield U, Watford really hurt us. Here's to a better start next season with a strong sustained run in all competitions and a glorious finish.
Robbo played poorly for a large part of the season, but his form in the final stretch was back to his best. Especially the saves in the Boro and Man City games.
I noticed that as well, he made some great saves towards the end of the season, Boro especially comes to mind. That save he made where he was moving to the right but had to punch a ball away to the left particularly comes to mind.
Like almost everyone else I voted good season. But a great season - which for me would be CL place or winning a cup - is not very far away at all, when you consider we gave up 6 points to Newcastle and allowed poor teams like Watford, Wigan and Fulham to get draws. And in the cups it takes finalists to knock us out. The big positive for me is the establishment of Berbs/Keane up front. The previous season we had rotation, and the result was we never scored more than 3 in a game. How different this year has been.
how different the last half of the season was you mean we couldnt score away from home at all in the first half! the only way we can get anything from next season is too strengthen left back, and get daws and king back to where they wer before king was injured. And robbo needs confidence to collect at set pieces. or we need to start kicking it away from danger! instead of givin it to the opposition in the box!
Good season because consistency is the key after breaking into the top 5. Hopefully you can break the top 4 next year and kick a certain London team out of it. Who? Oh I don't know... Chelski
If only! Sooner that bubble bursts the better for all. Mourinho off in the summer, Lampard to follow and Terry to go soon after when they won't pay him the £150k a week he demands. Barcelona is my guess
hell, don't stop there. wenger says 'no thanks' to a life without dein, henry says same to life without wenger, and both clubs are left to struggle for the last champions' league spot. assuming, of course, that they can keep up with david moyes' rejuvinated 'pudlians.
Good season. Terrible luck with injuries, shafted in the UEFA Cup, but strong finish - who was thinking 5th place early in the season?
Come on, Colm. Don't be modest. You were really the most optimistic of all of us, weren't you? You *knew* we'd make Europe!
We did well to finish 5th after the start we had. Plus points: Berbatov excellent all season, Dawson - Mr Reliable, Zokora in the second half of the season started to control the midfield. The strikers scored alot of goals which is what you look for at the start of the season.
