Generally speaking, how do you think people will remember him? He had great success with the Juve regime, with Moggi doing all the transfer dealings for him. He won the World Cup in 2006 where he did a very good job. He failed at Inter (where Moratti even let him hand pick his own players) and he obviously failed at this World Cup. Seems like he can do well with a good talented squad, but struggles when things aren't so straightforward. Doesn't seem to have a great eye for talent.
I will always be thankful for the world cup victory he helped bring us, but that does not excuse how incredibly horrible things went this time around. He put his ego and player bias ahead of what mattered the most this time around and that was building the best cohesive squad he could. Instead of Cassano and Pazzini, players with proven chemistry and talent, we got Gilardino and Iaquinta. Any six year old with standard knowledge of football and player attributes could have told you that this front line was an epic fail. He waited long into our last game in the tournament to try out a front line that actually made sense. A coach should not wait till this late in a tournament to say; "well, I guess now maybe I should mix things up a bit". He kept using failed formations and tactics even after disastrous results. So this is my summary of Marcello Lippi's time with the Italian team.... 2006 - A 2010 - F
the difference between him and domenech is 1 penalty in a penalty shoot out. both were as bad as eachother at the euro 08 v the confed cup 09 and at the wc 10. staggeringly poor, given his record at juve.
Even though he helped us win the cup in 06 I think he will go down as a goat. It started after the 06 WC when he took the trophy and ran as soon as the ref scandal started. He abandoned us for the Euro only to come back for this disaster which he is 80% responsible for. Sad too because this man was considered a genius. One of the most successful coaches of all time.
I...I guess this is what happens when you develop an inferiority complex. EDIT: Not to mention the grammar error. :S
The guy was a complete drop kick, outdated and had no idea of team cohesion. So everyone who keeps saying what a genius he is is seriously deluded - the guys abiity as a coach was that he could not even see what worked with what in his own team. Cassano is laughing all the way at him as he steps straight back into the side. I always hated insinka and thought gila was a flop - we all saw that di natale was not up to speed, pazz needs a creative forse like cassano feeding him 80% of the goals he is credited with - quags was the best of the lot and lippi could not see that. The minute pirlo stepped back on the field we started to look cohesive and the ball was carried through the midfield and the forwards started having the upper hand. The defence was always shaky - we all knew it - lippi did not see the obvious. That is why he is a retard and a sook that runs off to the dressing room straight away without even shaking slovakias coach's hand - what a wanker - he thought he was so good and so smart and he will go down in history as the coach who selected the wrong players, didn't know how to use his team and the coach responsible for the worst world cup performance in the whole history of this ********in planet.... ha ha ha.....could not have happened to a better a hole.....go choke on your sooky tears lippi - we all think you are a sad, old goose joke of a little weener man.... ha ha ha
Lippi's accomplishments will always outweigh his failures. I've been his biggest hater for the past year, but you can't take away what the man has done. Serie A, Champions League and a World Cup. How many managers have won all that? The loss is still fresh and I think some of you are mad, but you can't ******** with his repertoire. He just lost it at the very end. He will still be considered one of the best coaches of all time.
The question was how he will be remembered - the answer is as the guy that could not see the obvious that italy was missing a cassano type No. 10 and that everyone knew the defence was sus - that everyone knew that a baloteli was the bit of fantasy that we needed - that instinka was hopeless and untalented - that gila is beaten and pushed off the ball by an 8 year old, that DDR loves taking dives when no one touches him pretending that he was shot by a bazzooka, that italy first goal was a goal keepers error, that italys 2nd goal was the weakest penalty given for another DDR dive, that italy played for 15 mins out of a possibe 270 like we know they should and lippi will be remembered bu everyone as an old man that completely fluffed it and could not see the obvious.
I've been as critical of Lippi as anyone the past 2 years. But, his record speaks for himself. He's the only manager in HISTORY to win the World Cup, Champions League, and the Intercontinental Cup (along with all his Serie A titles and Supercoppas). He'll be remembered for bringing us a 4th World Cup. Bearzot is a legend and no one really remembers his total failure in 1986. Bearzot never won half of what Lippi won. The point is Lippi really got it wrong this time around, but his legacy will still be great.
People will remember that he refused to shake hands at the end of the loss...really classy...let Baggio coach the next team!!
I will remember Lippi for his 1996 CL win with Juve and the 2006 World Cup win with Italy. It's best to remember people when they were at their best. Like Cannavaro, post-2006 was a farce.
I will remember an arrogant prick who treated the media with distain and in the end shat on his own head.....could not have ever happened to a better a hole of a guy i reckon
I remember the guy that made a joke out of our national team. Fair enough leaving a Ronaldhino home if you have 2-3 replacements but to leave every player with some fantasy back home or on the bench is a disgrace to world football. Of course the players were scared and trembled you old fool. Everytime they attacked, they knew it was waste of time. And what type of manager has grudges against half the italian players. Even Mourinho did everything he could to mend with Balotelli and in the end, he still played a part. Let that be a lesson that the national manager's job is to mould our 'best' players... not treat it like an ego trip.
Some people need to realise it eventually. The loss is still fresh in the minds but there was a reason for why he became the Italy coach in the first place. Despite this disaster, he has a better record at World Cups than Sacchi and Trap. You are only describing Lippi from the last two years. Don't you remember the 2006 win? Were you following the support when he was coaching Juve? If you want to know who was a real a***hole, do some research on Arrigo Sacchi. You can start with my blog.
I'll never forget Lippi and the '06 team. He deserves a lot of credit for building that team unity and strength. That being said, the 2010 WC will be the last thing people will remember him being a part of.
Regardless of how bad this tournament performance was (and it was BAD), no one can overlook the fact that Lippi was not only one of the best coaches of his generation, but arguably of all time as well. His trophy case alone speaks volumes to the kind of career he had, and indeed the incredible amount of success he achieved should never be overlooked. As upset as I am at him for how he handled the position this time around, it still won't change the fact that I am appreciative (and always will be) leading this team to WC glory in 06, and effectively allowing this Azzurri fan to live his dream.
Ahh - the damage he caused went deeper than a shat performance. Fair enough, he totally got it wrong and what was shown at the end was that the guy had lost his marbles and needs to be placed in a Generatic nursing home - thats how far from reality he is. The real damage he caused was to leave players at home who deserved to go to the world cup - some players play all their life and have one shot at world cup playing eg. miccoli and some jerk like lippi wrecks his one and only chance to play in a world cup - that is unforgiveable I think - f him for what he done - he did it in a shameful way and we always say thank you , thank you lippi for the 06 win, however the fact is that the dodgy digusting stupid ref decesion that shafted australia in the last world cup - you know the one where grosso pulled off the most fantastic "hand of god" scam of a dive to be rewarded with a penalty when we all knew that extra time would knock us out. A bit of luck??? A HUGE about of luck, right up there with the diego hand of god and henry handbball against ireland - thats what I credit the 06 win to - a great even squad in that every forward kicked at least one goal, we had our fantasy players and a strong defence. Lippi's role in the win is over rated I think. Look at Inter - he can't win anything when he gets to choose his own judgements - he has a shat eye for talent. Anyone that picks Instinka is obviously someone that has no idea about talent. I say the guy is a tosser and needs to be remembered as the guy who led us to our most embarrasing world cup experience, the guy who led us to our first losses to a few teams and the guy that had no idea about what formation he was going to use. The coach who won a world cup but did it in the most hit and run method, it was either gonna be a great result or a crap one - nothing solid and consistant about the guy - and the Italian Federation was wrong to not realize that there was no way that this alziemers case was ever gonna win anything again.
