He seems to be accepting the idea that the democrats are part of the debacle of the shutdown, (as opposed to it being wholly down to the GOP).

Shouldn't he be trying to distance himself from it as much as possible? 'It's nothing to do with us', kinda thing???

People understand me so poorly that they don't even understand my complaint about them not understanding me.

 

The issue is that when you write “Democrats” in a sentence like that, to me that means Democratic primary voters. I mean, it’s literally their decision. It’s not like Virginia in 2021 when they had a convention and not a primary. When you write that word it seems to me (and please correct me if I’m wrong) that you mean the party apparatus. That apparatus doesn’t pick candidates. They can influence it obviously but they don’t always get their way.

 

Yeah this is a weird argument. You argue that the voters should get to decide but then acknowledge that the apparatus steers a lot of money and influence towards certain candidates which we know beyond a fact makes a difference in elections. If you would like the status quo to continue (which it sounds like you do) then you don't get to a situation where the voters are in control. So honestly I find the entire argument you just made to either be in bad faith or just not very well thought out.

Now you can disagree with me on my conclusion, but that ultimately would be a difference in opinion. You must be pretty hard to get along with if everyone who doesn't agree with you must think the Pentagon can levitate in your brain.

Let’s go back to the last normal primary, 2020. The eventual nominee was dead in the water until South Carolina voters had their say.

In 2016, once Biden decided not to run, there was no chance for anyone but Hilary. Yeah, the establishment supported her over Bernie but Bernie was never gonna win anyway. It didn’t make any difference.

In 2008, the establishment wasn’t for Obama, but he won anyway.

2004 is getting to the hazy parts of my memory now, but arguably the establishment’s influence got Kerry over the line; it certainly torpedoed Dean’s run.

The best thing is when you comment on this, don’t use “the Democrats” because the reader can’t know what you mean…voters, donors, elected leaders, the DNC? Which?

PS Levitating the Pentagon was the illustration for a description of superego tripping I read in a book, I think in a Poli Sci class. Anyway, when people think the purity of their intentions can alter time and space, or make America vote for Bernie, that’s superego tripping.
