Well, you did ask and I don't see how it is more difficult than your idea of "Laws banning firing someone for (legal) speech outside of work".

But you were not aware Brendan Carr publicly threatened ABC and Kimmel got yanked as a result?

And, by the way, Carr also recently said "we're not done yet".

One thing enabling the rise of authoritarianism is that the political media adamantly refuses to connect any dots, nor discern any patterns or clear long-term goals in different events which media outlets insist on treating as discrete, one-off incidents.

So it's maybe not fair* to blame an ordinary citizen for not doing better on a message board.

    *It's absolutely fair, of course.

Some of us aren’t terminally online, and don’t keep up with the latest celebrity news.

I mean, I didn’t know Taylor was engaged until a few days after, when my wife told me.

You posted six times today in a thread which has discussed Kirk and Kimmel extensively.

The drunk fools himself into believing everyone doesn't notice it, but only himself.

If that's a dig at me, that's a pretty unfair characterization. I'm an appellate attorney----I don't view it as being terminally online to keep up with SCOTUS opinions, especially pretty important ones like NRA v. Vullo, which was the case I was referencing earlier.

Your comparison is off. Nobody gives a shit whether Taylor Swift is engaged. Kimmel's firing, on the other hand, was yesterday's headline news (BIGLY font) even in my local newspaper in Romania (10,000 km away from US), in a provincial town of about 300,000 people.

Also, the right are trying to make out it's simply about free speech when, in truth, it's more a matter that they want the ability to say what they want and nobody's free to say what they want as a response.

That's not free speech. That's people saying what they want with zero consequences... not the same thing.

What they call 'cancel culture' is usually just people responding to some guy being a complete dickhead.

I guaranty to you that more people care about Taylor Swift getting engaged than anything to do with Jimmy Kimmel.

Don’t worry, all my digs are directed at Brummie and his (misplaced) self importance and intellectual pomposity.

Man, the Jimmy Kimmel fiasco was front news everywhere. I found out about right when it happened because, when I opened the computer and accessed the yahoo main page, it was "Breaking news", in a red band.

Anyway, it is a bit of a pointless argument, I was just surprised that you were not aware of the event unless you have completely without a phone, TV or computer in the last 2 days.

It was either the main or the second item on the news over here as well, not because of Kimmel but because it was about America's move to an authoritarian regime where the government silences even the mildest criticism.

Regarding Taylor Swift... I'm still not sure who she is.

I think he's suggesting, using sarcasm, that the youth DON'T want a 'centrist democrat' like Obama, (as an alternative to someone more radical).

But, y'know... that's just a guess on my part :)

The John Favreau podcast has a good bit on all this and it reflects the same ideas many of us have stated.

    https://crooked.com/podcast/dramatize-the-injustice/

As he says, it's easy for us political obsessives to follow the importance of what's happening but, what about people that aren't that aware. Unless we make a big song and dance about it, how will they realise what it all means and just doing the same sort of 'business as usual' nonsense the dems usually do, how does anyone think the situation will change?

There should be immediate publicity blasts by Democrats in cities where the ICEstapo is operating "These are your family members, friends & coworkers just trying to live their lives. Donald Trump and Stephen Miller (always name that rancid motherf'er) have declared war on hard-working people who love America. We are better than this" (even if we're really not. We have to win over squishy ICs)

Call out the SC too for allowing profiling.
