Colorado has been after him for a while, I think like the last six months or so and they are the only MLS team that approached him, so good for them. I'm really not so worried. Colorado still doesn't have a #10 since Valdarama is gone. And doesn't Grimiandi play the same d-mid role that Mastroeni does?

given our defensive problems makes you wonder why we didn't approach him, especially since we're nowhere near the salary cap.

Wouldn't he count as an SI?
And I thought he was more of a midfield player, has he played on the back line effectively before?

Grimandi is an extremely versatile player, and believe it or not, a very underrated reason that Arsenal won the double in 1998. He can play d-mid, center mid, wing back, or center back. He's going to be a fantastic MLS player, I believe.

This is really old news even though it was just officially announced. It was pretty much decided upon back in the fall that he would go to the Rapids. My understanding was Grimandi wanted Colorado and obviously Hankinson wanted him.

Zak, I sense some frustration. Pires has talked about coming to MLS in three years time so maybe the Crew can put in their request now. :)

I don't know, because they seem like two totally different situations. Then again, maybe I'm just hoping...as long as it doesn't hurt us.

By the way, how do you pronounce his name?

This is an entirely different situation. Lothar Matthaeus was 38 when he came to MLS, still playing effectively (except once he got here), but certainly winding down his career. He had already won everything imaginable, from a World Cup with Germany to the UEFA Cup and countless domestic titles with Bayern Munich - there really wasn't that much more for him to play for.

Grimandi is certainly closer to retirement than his teen years, but 32 is an entirely different story. He seems to still be hungry as he's only really tasted EPL success - which is still great, but it's certainly not winning a European trophy or the World Cup.

He'll be fine with MLS and Colorado.
