How much is Tim Howard worth? I think that if MLS were going to sell him to Man U, it would carry a pretty big price tag. He is young and has a lot of years ahead of him. Any ideas?

The blood of 8 goats and a seashell necklace from pier 1 imports, MLS will buckle for nothing less.

In all seriousness though I think the highest Man. U would offer for Howard would be in the $1-2.5 million range.

If they were to sell him it would be for at least $1 million. That's a drop in the bucket for Man Utd. What does that disaster waiting to happen (Barthez) make? As a Metro supporter I'd hate to see him go but he must continue to develop at a higher level for the sake of the USMNT.

If you remember the way the salary negotiations for Tim went, my sense is that it's highly likely he has a min. release clause in his contract, and it's one that he likes (i.e., is not unreasonably high.)

It depends. If Howard is to later become a starter, I think he should be sold for a lot more than 2 million. He's going to one of the top teams of the world, and MLS deserves something good in return.

Right now $1.5-2.5 million. If he does well in Gold Cup and Confederations Cup the price would go up, with the more clubs driving up the price.

MLS will want over a million...

MAN U will most likely offer in between 500,000 to 800,000 pounds for a young goal keeper with little NAT exp.

Manchester United approach for Howard denied.
    All stories, Chris Bergin. www.ussocceruk.com

MLS officials have been quick to play down the link between Manchester United and MetroStars keeper Tim Howard, stating the Premiership club has not been in contact with the League.

"We (MLS) have not been contacted by Manchester United in reference to Tim Howard,” said Alan Plum, senior coordinator of communications for MLS.

It is understood that the nature of interest in Howard is merely surrounding a possible invite to train with the club at the end of the year, following in the footsteps of Los Angeles midfielder Simon Elliott, who spent two weeks at Old Trafford at the end of the 2001 season.

In regards to any transfer, Howard’s eligibility for a UK work permit would have seen the 24-year-old wait until at least next year before being able to join the United.

The Home Office requirement of any non-EU player is the need for him to have played in 75 per cent of his national team’s last 24 month’s worth of matches.

Howard only has five caps to his name with the US at present.

Howard’s other avenue to a work permit is down to his dual nationality passport, which – as well as US – has Hungarian registration. Hungary are vying for a place in the EU next year.

The MetroStars keeper recently signed a multi-year contract extension with MLS,

true ... but there's a decent chance he won't see the field in either of those tournaments (exhibits A and B being Friedel and Keller).

do the metros have a decent backup to step in?

Not that he could sign till Summer 2004, I wouldn't want to see him playing reserve matches in front of one man and his dog at Bury FC.

Maxim, in Major League Soccer the league owns his contract, not the club, thus you have to buy the player from MLS, not the Metro's GM. Manchester United won't be asking how much to the Metro's GM.

Had ManU asked the Metros GM, he would have announced it in the next 60-90 days.

I think they just asked the Metro's GM for tapes of Howard. If you wanted tapes, that is who you would go to. I imagine they need to decide if they want him before starting to talk money.

To be honest, it would be a great thing for the MLS if they only got half a million (although I agree that they will get more). This is a world wide marketing coup. One of the biggest (if not the) teams in the world is willing TO PAY for one of our players. This will be noticed. Maybe even here.

He's a dual citizen of Hungary and the United States. In 2004 Hungary will possibly be admitted to the EU, thus he will be eligible to play pretty much wherever he wants in Europe, since it would be a Bosman violation for the leagues to cap numbers of EU players.
