Angelo Stiller is really good. though I would have preferred Adam Wharton. Wharton is much better defender and dueler.

Stiller is probably much more matured in build up but I think Wharton is just 21. He is gonna reach Rodri level for sure.

I feel like if you are not renewing players because you don't want the coach to play them, you have the wrong coach.

It is up to the coach to properly utilize the players.

As much as this board likes to dump on Modric and his age, this year would have been absolute disaster if he was not in the squad.

Players have to win their playing time. If you are getting beat out by a 40 yr old, it says more about the player than Modric.

The problem with Carlo is that he never allowed an honest competition for playing time.

Id counter point giving Guler more minutes in MF would have helped his development. Modric or no we weren’t going to win anything anyway so that could have been a silver lining.

Carlo used Modric instead of Guler, so yeah. No Modric would have been better.

Modric had very little impact this season tbh. Ceballos was the starter when we beat Atalanta, City etc. He had a purple patch before injury vs Real Sociedad. Modric started vs Valencia, Arsenal and looked physically spent in those games.

Like I said, that is an issue with Carlo and not Modric.
If Xabi starts playing Modric over Bellingham for no apparent reason, do you get rid of Modric or the coach?

Then why have him take up a roster spot when we could be buying a young MF to integrate into the team?

Well this is the problem, Modric should be not be starting games. He is a supersub, or 6th or 7th midfielder used to generate opportunites from the midfield.

There were games where Modric was the best midfielder of the bench.

Because as much as this board likes to ignore it or pretend otherwise, he has served a purpose but he was overused because of the makeup of the squad.

That was Carlos preference. We could’ve given more minutes to Guler. Modric was his nap blanket that he couldn’t bear to get rid of.

Because you can only bleed in so many young midfielders at a time. It is why bringing back Nico right now makes no sense. Xabi has to sort out Guler, Camavinga etc.

Right. We could’ve bled Guler…. But didn’t because Modric was given the minutes. So we’re a whole year behind.

If Modric was more of a vocal leader in the dressing room I’d say keep him, but he isn’t so again why use a roster spot.

The fact Xabi has no vets left makes me think he will want Modric in the dressing room just so he can implement his new systems have a veteren presense who will just echo his instructions. He does not need to be vocal to do that.

I am amazed the board wants to have squad filled of 20-24 year olds and no vets. Part of the problem is that this squad is very immature and they do what they want on the field.

At the same time, we are talking about roster spots at the end of the bench where having younger players it counterintuitive because they will not get regular playing time.

We’ve got Carvajal, Courtois and to a certain degree Fede. We’re good.

Carva, Rudiger, Courtois are under contract next season so doubt Modric will be given a renewal based on veteran leadership quota.

Still feels like all these moves are too little, too late.

Should have done these bit by bit, one at a time the last couple of summers but instead we are trying to push them all through in a couple if weeks before the CWC and because it's too expensive and difficult to grab 6 world class players in one window we are settling for 3rd and 4th options that normally would be last resort but currently are the priorities

Like? I'm genuinely curious on seeing a well-thought out plan with these WC players we need [I'm not trying to humiliate, I'm genuinely curious]. I can only think of Saliba at CB.

I’d keep Modric on lower wages for another season. He’s still decent enough off the bench. The number of games keeps increasing, the team needs a wide bench.

As good as he is, it's time. Other players should get his minutes. If Stiller is signed, Camavinga, Guler and Diaz will be fighting for those minutes. I for one don't want to see Guler's development stall for another season.

    No.

We need those minutes going to other players not shoe-horning the 40-year old to keep him happy and warm for the summer tournament.
