Saw Carreras comparisons with Marcos Alonso and Reguilon as well. Spurs and Chelsea spent big money on them. I hope he's an injury free Coentrao version.

FWIW, Yamal had 0 goals and 0 assists in both games Carreras played against him. He did win a penalty by diving in 5-4 game. Other game was 1-0 loss for Benfica.

I am not taking any of this 3 CB formations seriously until I see it with my own eyes.

Xabi's formations in the Real Madrid and Real Sociedad youth systems was primarily 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. He is also used these formations when he originally started at Bayer. He switched to the 3 CB system because his best players were Wirtz, Grimaldo, and Frimpong. It made a lot of sense given their roster.

Nevermind that we do not have the CBs for it.

This is like Carlo creating a system around Vini, and then taking away Vini from him and expecting him to play the same way.

This to me is just an over simplificaiton of our reality by the majority of pundtis and a lack of critical thinking. It is not any different than when Mbappe got here and having to hear pundits talking about him playing left wing when he hadn't played that role for years at PSG.

Unless Real Madrid buy 2 more CBs, this 3 CB system is not happening. Not only do you need 3 CBs, but you need 3 alternates. And no, a semi-retired Alaba does not count as one.

Agreed. I don’t think we’ll see (or want) a five-man defence. I think we either see the same front three attack as this season, or we see a four-man midfield with a new passer added to the midfield.

Some teams have played fast, vertical and nice to watch football with five-man defences, but it’s not something I’d want over the course of a whole season personally.

Especially after this season, it's not really a fitting title. You have my blessings to proceed.

Glad to see this hasn't been dragged on unnecessarily. Now let's be aggressive in trying to close our other key signings.

Stiller is a fascinating dude, having him will greatly elevate our midfield's technical ability. If he is signed, it'll mean that Modric and Ceballos must leave.

I hope they know that signing for RM means that they won't play in Spanish NT while de la Fuente is the coach.

I think there may even be a lot of games that we score 3 early goals but the team can't keep possession and it's basically a fortress around the box and a 60 minute snoozefest for the fans.

Then you'll have the whole "tactics" and "systems" crowd come out of the woodwork at tell us how the team has no "identity" to explain why it closes shop when it's winning, while at same time complaining the team can only play one way and doesn't adapt to circumstances.

You going to be very disappointed if you think Xabi is going to have the team dominating possession

His system is get the ball wide and down the touchline, then cross it in.

At least with figurative "giants" but literally average size men for strikers, Vini and Kiki surely we will out muscle defenders and win the majority of 50/50 challenges.

The team doesn't even have 3 defenders healthy enough to play, let alone 3 CB's. This was a genius Perez masterstroke of a manager hire and planning.

Good decision about the midfielder. Our midfield is a lot overrated. Fede gets best in the world shouts with out ever dominating the midfield. Tchoumeni with out a build up contribution gets flaunted as best 6 . Camavinga who is yet to have consistent run of good games is a top name.

Questions need to be asked about the midfield.

This thread is on fire, I like it.

Now would anyone care to share their balanced viewpoints on A. Stiller?

Give it a rest about Carlo man.

Also Alonso dominated possession and plays through the middle with an insane field tilt.

He attacks through anywhere in the final third that does not mean he is predominantly wing oriented.

Infact he restricts long switches to the wing , he also restricts the LB to RB circular ball movements and want the team to play through the middle.

Top top signing if we can make it happen. A very smart player, great passer who hustles very hard defensively. Everything our midfield is missing in terms of profile.

That's exactly what I think we should do...goodbye to Modric and Ceballos. It's time.

What were Xabi and Kroos' stats?

Stiller is a deep laying playmaker correct?

He may well use 3ATB at RM, we don't know.
If players like Jacobo and Martinez are deemed good enough to play a role in the first team he may well do it.
3ATB would also shield TAA defensively.

Yes he is. I think he'd be the correct player to sign for this role, he's even more secure in possession than Zubimendi and made his national team debut recently.
He's arguably the only one who can fill the void left by Kroos for Germany.

    Per @tjcope |

•Alvaro Carreras is the best placed among other LB’s to join RM, he is close.

•Grimaldo + other LB’s are also in the picture/alternatives just in case.

This excites me then. Our little experiment with the hyper physical midfield absolutely did not pan out. I wonder how he compared to Kroos defensively as that will dictate our formation and how we decide to protect him.

Xabi was pretty damn good defensively. Maybe less mobile with the ball than Kroos but the guy operated as a third CB.
