Just for fun...If all US players were available for callup to the Brazilian National team which do you think would get a shot (taking away all biases of course - in other words make believe they were all Brazilians). Knowing how Brazilains think here is My take: Friedel and Keller, easily would be at least called up. Howard possibly but probably too soon. Once you leave the goalie realm, things get a little tougher. When Mathis was at his peak he probably was good enough to at least get a call up, but wouldnt be a starter. Besides him Donovan would probably be looked at and I think thats about it. Pope never was good enough, even compared to Brazilian defenders, Agoos would probably not even be a starter in any major Brazilian club. Reyna would NEVER be called up just not skilled enough to play mid for Brazil.
Donovan is basically a younger, faster version if Juninho. Howard would be in there, and I think Convey has the talent to play with these guys to.
Yikes...with all due respect, Convey hasn't proved anything yet, especially on a National team level. AT this stage I think Convey would be a bench player in most main Brazilian clubs. National team, NO WAY! Not even close!
This is such a loaded question. For one thing, Brazil plays a very unique style of soccer that would automatically preclude several top Americans from making the team. A better question would be how many Americans would make England's roster. Since the question was asked, here goes: Brad Friedel and Kasey Kelley-The Brazilians do have Dida, who just won a PK shootout in the Champions League Final for AC Milan so he has to be among the three, likely ahead of Keller and behind Friedel. John O'Brien-When healthy, O'Brien could definitely make this team as a reserve defender. He can't compare to Roberto Carlos or Cafu but after that he's as good as the rest. DaMarcus Beasley-A left-footer with his work rate would have to merit a spot on the Brazil roster. He would even merit starting considerating considering how great a tandem he and Roberto Carlos could be on the left flank, with Beasley being able to cover when RC moved forward. That's about it folks. Donovan is great but Brazil has enough players like him (Although comparing him to Juninho is so wrong on so many levels). Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Emerson, Robinho just to name a few. McBride doesn't fit Brazil's style. Clint pre-ACL injury would be on the team but he is not back to that form yet. Pope's not as big as some of Brazil's center backs but when healthy he could merit consideration on Brazil's 23. Save this question for five years from now. I'm sure there will be quite a few more Americans that could crack the Brazil roster then.
We don't have any field players that would get anything more than a call up, yet Brazil can't manage to beat us by more than a goal. Even lost once, IIRC.
He'll shut you up just like he's shut most of his naysayers in the last two months. I'll be saving this post. Hope you do too.
Beakmon...oh gee thanks for the info...I thought all US'ers were eligible to play for Brazil!! Note my original thread started with "Just for fun"...fun...you understand the concept?
Who would get a shot over their careers? or who would make a 23 man roster? these are two totally different questions: Over their careers (would get a "cup of coffee"): Pope, Mathis, possibly McBride, Beasley (later), Convey (maybe), Reyna Would be top 23 at the present: O'Brien, Howard, Keller, Donovan Starter: Friedel
JerzyRebel, There is no way in hell Beasley could currently make the Brazilian team, let alone merit a call-up. When compared to their talent he is in a lower tier. As to everyone else: No way Donovan could make their A nor B team because they have so many players as good or better than him at his position. And the McBride and Mathis comments are laughable.
I didn't say anything about proving anything to anybody. Like so many others before you assume a player from America is not even close to any number of Brazilian players just becuase he is American. I can't wait until we get rid of this stupid stigmitism where just because a player is From America, it means he doesn't have any skill and is worse than any player from Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany, Spain, Holland, and England. It doesn't matter if that player is a 1-legged, retarded, half blind 50 year old who just suffered from a stroke, he is still better than the American. Its impossible to prove that regulars from major clubs are actually BETTER TALENTS than Bobby Convey. Seriously, why would Convey be a bench player on those clubs? What place did Brazil come in during qualifying? 4th? They were losing to the likes of Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Those Brazilian teams fielded players from those main teams you referred to. How is it if they are soooo talented that they wuold lose to countries that we have no troubles with? You asked which US players would make Brazil's 23 man roster. I said I thought that Convey had the talent to play with the Brazilians. You disagreed. Fine. Why are the younger, uncapped Brazilians better than Bobby Convey? I honestly have no clue as to why Convey might be better than them or even if he is better, but I do know for a fact that he is talented enough to play well against any international side in the world. Something he'll prove in France
Seriously....you gotta relax and do something besides post on Bigsoccer.....my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek.........
Well see thats the differnce. I watch MLS AND about 4 Brazilian league matches a week, so Im quite aware of the level of play and skill in both countries and Convey at this point is extremley overrated. He wouldnt be allowed on most practice fields in Brazil. Maybe one day, but not now. I will be very interested in seeing what he can do at the Confed cup. This is Convey's 1st real test.
So I guess all those high and mighty Brazilians lost to all those lesser South American countries to make things more interesting right? Brazilians soccer players are not Soccer Gods. They are atheletes just like they have over here. Athletic ability has NOTHING to do with what country you were born in. ther NBA has proven that On what grounds is Convey overated? From my point of view, he is exceeding expectations by turning into a standout of our Senior team before turning 20. BTW-I am a fan of the EPL, a league that is superior to the Brazilian league according to the world at large. I've watched every team in that league on TV at least twice this last season. This most certainly is not Convey's first real test. Any of the Youth Championships he participated in (and will participate in) were biggeer tests than the ConFed Cup
"Convey at this point is extremley overrated. He wouldnt be allowed on most practice fields in Brazil. Maybe one day, but not now." not allowed to practice? didnt know Convey was that bad
I watch at least three sitcoms a week and one of the things I've noticed is that Spin City is really funny. But will there ever be another ALF?
