Exactly how many rivalries exist in England? Im not talking about a cross town rivalry either, Im talking about a national rivalry. for example.. in Mexico, America v Chivas is a rivalry (superclasico). even fans that pertain to other clubs acknowledge its status as a rivalry and many prefer to watch that game than their own team play.
Man Utd v Liverpool is the main one, but Arsenals success lately means they`ve really replaced Liverpool.
Well, we all know about the big ones Boca juniors - River plate Chivas - America Barcelona - Real Madrid Celtic - Rangers I think by "national rivalries" he means that the rivalry is not confined to being in the same city. Just that it's the biggest match for that club, like Barca-Real. Edit- For some reason I forgot that this was only involving english clubs. My bad
Well virtually every club has at least one 'derby' game, or rivalry. Cambridge's traditional grudge matches are against Peterborough - a team from another city, but in the same county. It's pretty much the only time you'll see hooligan trouble at The Abbey. Northampton also have a rivalry with Boro but there isn't too much tension between Cambridge and Northampton. There is always a good atmosphere these days at Cambridge games against both Leyton Orient and Brentford, although those rivalries have really only come about in the last 10 years or so. None of these would be considered particularly important to fans of other clubs, just as I'm not that interested in the Port Vale-Stoke rivalry, for example. But to supporters of the clubs involved the intensity of feeling is every bit as important as for a Liverpool-Everton or one of the 'bigger' derbies.
I think these are the Premiership Clubs main rivals: Arsenal-Spurs Aston Villa-Birmingham Birmingham-Villa Blackburn-Burnley Bolton-Man Utd Charlton-Probably one of the London clubs although they seem to be a fairly nice-guy kinda club Chelsea-Fulham Everton-Liverpool Fulham-Chelsea Leeds-Bradford Leicester-Some midlands club Villa or Birmingham Man Utd-Man City City-Utd Middlesboro-Newcastle Newcastle-Sunderland Pompey-Saints Tottenham-Arsenal Southampton-Portsmouth Wolves-West Brom I know ones missin but I just can't think!
You forgot Millwall - West Ham. Personally I'd say Newcastle - Sunderland is the most intense rivalry in England.
I can't say with any certainty (as I support neither) but if the two clubs weren't challenging for the title then they probably wouldn't care that much about each other. Correct me if I'm wrong.
There are alot of rivalries in the premiership, but for me being a Liverpool fan, for me the biggest are LFC - Everton and LFC - Man U.
Correct. They're only hating each other now due to a competitive rivalry, but if that didn't exist, neither set of fans would be talking.
Any game with the Lancashire teams is a rivalry. Liverpool-Everton, Man U-Man City, and Liverpool-Man U especially. So are the London derbies. I'd say there are hundreds of rivalries in the country. Basically every EPL game could become a rivalry with one particularly bitter game.
Most people are talkin bout Local Derbies rather than Rivalries. There is a lot of Midlands Derbies e.g. Wolves - West Brom, Villa - Brum, West Brom - Villa, Brum - Wolves and even Walsall are involved. Oh and not forgetting Col Utd - Southend! Big Essex Derby! lol
Sunderland - Newcastle Newcastle - Middlesborough Sunderland - Middlesborough Burnley - Blackburn Stockport - Burnley Oldham - Man City Oldham - Man United There are loads, but there are only four or five REALLY big derbies, Man C - Man U, Everton - Liverpool, Sunderland - Newcastle, Arsenal - Tottenham that have been based in the top flight all the time. (apart from Sun - New)
My point of view is obviously tainted here but I believe the most underrated rivalry by fans outside of England is that between Pompey and Southampton. Hopefully with both clubs in the Prem. at this point (it looks like Pompey are going to beat the drop) fans in the States will become more aware of/interested in it.
rdl is asking, what rivalries in England are so big that they draw in the fans of other clubs. It's not good enough that Spurs and Arsenal fans hate each other. What would matter is if Everton and Burnley fans care. In the NFL, I'm a fan of the Carolina Panthers. A big NFL rivalry is Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys. If both teams are good, and the Panthers were sucking, I'd probably watch the Skins and Cowboys if they were on at the same time. Because so many American football fans don't have a team nearby, or have a "new" team (the Panthers are only 9 years old), this may be a bigger phenomenon here than anywhere else. There aren't any population centers in England without a club, so there's no substantial pool of fans of the sport in general. Skins-Cowboys gets hyped because that's a game for fans without a team.
Some "fan" you are. You'd watch another match even though your team was playing? It goes like this: If Arsenal are playing, I watch that. If Arsenal aren't playing, I would probably watch a game like United v Liverpool if it was on TV.
Liverpool-Man utd loads of history between the 2 Man Utd-Arsenal mainly brought on by recent Prem titles Arsenal-Liverpool another 1 with history going back years Liverpool-Leeds Lancs vs Yorkie rivalry Leeds-Man utd same as above Leeds Arsenal north south rivalry all the others have rivalry when they arwe playing against each other but these are pretty much the biggest teams in england over the last 4 decades hence all the history.
If you'd been watching English football for 25 years before Arsenal ever came into being (and you didn't have Spurs or Chelsea or any other club within 250 miles), would you feel the same way? Also, you've got to remember, we don't have relegation. If a team sucks, there's nothing to play for.
I think fair-weather fans might watch another game - i.e. on champions league nights midweek nationwide games attract slightly lower crowds than normal (although the trend has been for slightly lower midweek crowds anyway), but regular fans wouldn't watch somebody else. Club rivalries tend to be a private affair between the two parties involved. The result doesn't mean much to anyone else, other than its effect on the table.
