Seriously, I took a Film Studies class in high school, and I remember one of our earliest assignments was to try to list every movie we had ever seen. I stopped somewhere in the 400s (used Leonard Maltin's Home Video Guide and just went through checking them off one by one). Anyway, that was over a decade ago, so I was wondering the other day how many I've seen since. After some very quick guesstimating based on a x/week average by year (taking into account some lean years in college and Peace Corps), I'm thinking my total is now somewhere around... 1200 (Or basically, as many movies as Mike Lastort and Gringo Tex each own on DVD)
I set myself up an account on IMDb mostly just to try and figure out how many I've seen. The count of ones that I remember well enough to find a title is up to 529.
I actually just started a list recently by going through IMDb. My current total is about 1100, and I didn't include movies where the title seemed familiar but I couldn't remember the plot.
Might be hard to believe, but the sun shines, grass grows, and birds sings...outside. Try it sometime.
In the mid-80s, when I was in grad school at LSU, I went to 300 movies in a single year. I would go to the three or four freebies on campus each week (usually art flicks, stuff like that) and off campus I'd go to either matinees or cheapnight at the off-campus art house (which in those days was subsidized by the porno theater across town, but video was really putting the squeeze on it by then). Used to be able to go see 5-7 movies a week for a grand total of $8-10 bucks. Them days is gone.
What a preposterous idea. Quantifing the number of films we have seen? Who knows and who cares given so many are meaningless and don't even register in our memory. I can think of a lot of better things to do than come up with a list of films. I rather talk about meaningful films based on genre or era.
Re: Re: How Many Movies Have You Seen? Did you and dawgpound not see the big grin in the first post? Jeez... Anyway, is one of the things on that list of "better things to do" going to internet message boards and posting in threads that you find meaningless? In the time it took to write your post, you could easily have guesstimated how many movies you've seen in your life. Don't worry, noone was going to check up on your total...
