This is getting away from the topic of the thread, but I don't think there's any indication that Sauerbrunn was "elected by her peers." I believe all captains have been selected by the coaches. I do still wonder what exactly happened with Sauerbrunn being removed as captain, but we can't say for sure that she didn't take herself out of the role. And IIRC, her being out with injury in 2018 contributed to it, or at least the timing suggested so. Additionally, every indication is that Lloyd and Rapinoe are real, not nominal, leaders on the team (vocally or otherwise), although I'd agree that Sauerbrunn and Ertz also offer veteran leadership. Of course, none of us really know since we're not in the locker room and don't see those team dynamics.

But we have all, I think, also seen Ertz, O'Hara, and sometimes Heath talking tactics in games with others.

Through the teevee I can't tell if they are imparting their own wisdom or transmitting fresh instructions from the sideline/bench; but we do seem to have a lot of coach-on-the-field types, and it doesn't seem to bring about confusion or conflict, but rather typify considerable smarts and preparation and organization

Two are what is required with with the diminished roster hence 16 field players are all you can have. that is quite a bit less than the 20 field players with a 23 player roster. They are also having to play on only two days turnaround. That makes the Olympics a much more physically demanding tournament than the WWC. Which is a good reason why it is so hard to win the Olympics the year after winning a WWC. It is very hard to celebrate properly and then be ready for the more demanding tournament.
