How good is Cha Doo-Ri?

This is a question from somebody who hasn't seen him play extensively...

Cha is a player that I gravitated to during the '02 Cup, partly because of his bloodlines, and partly because I could relate to his shaved head and carefree, youthful demeanor. Of the Korean roster, Cha seems most like myself and other Korean-Americans I know.

Cha was apparently a Hiddink favorite, but other than that bicycle kick attempt in the 90th minute against Italy, he didn't do much as a late second half sub in the WC. I read shortly after the tournament that he was going to play in Germany... I figured that Cha was poised to become a prominent striker for Korea in the coming years.

So what since then? I was in Korea a couple of months ago, and I talked to my cousins about Korea's upcoming football prospects and mentioned Cha. They remarked that he was one of the most overrated players in the country, which I found interesting (I'm sure his father's excellence works against him as much as for him). My cousins rated him as a fast player who offered little else.

So I ask again... what's up with Cha? How has he done in Germany? And is he a legitimate prospect for '06?

Cha Duri is all speed/stamina/power and no technique, flair, ball control, and basically anything that has to do with ball control and skill. He's also impatient which is a big minus for an attacker.

What he's used for basically is to exhaust the opposition's defense by roaming all over the place and using his speed to tire down the opponent's defense. He'll score if God's having a good day.

he should switch his position to defender (or wing back)
he got the size, speed, stamina and he wont be much blamed for scoring 1 goal per year.

in other words, he's a athlete, not a footballer...

Yeah it's pretty obvious that Cha Doo Ri is one of prolly the most overrated Korean prospect...

I followed Cha in Eintracht early this past season, and the first game i watched were against Bayer Leverkusen.
Actually Cha was the best player, he was involved with everything, he got 5-6 chances to score, but he didnt, and that´s he´s biggest problem i think.
He made the final passes and finally got an assist.
he wasnt that good in the other games but say that he´s crap is bad and wrong.

Well, maybe he's coming around a little. He scored the third of Korea's four goals against Kuwait.

    screw all u haters..

keep hatin' but the fact is that cha is one of the best wingers in korea..

it doesnt matter if his dad was a super star or not, cuz clubs in bundesliga arent that stupid to buy a player just because of his dad was a super star back in the days..

they obviously saw potential in his abilities..

and they can judge players' potential much better then us "bigsoccer forum posters" do..

i would love to c all u haters' faces when cha starts tearing ******** apart few years from now..

I like to see how u respond in few years when u see Cha working in McDonalds... :D

U might be right, like everyone said, he's fast, strong, and is heck of a athlete, but the fact is, he doesn't have football skills. We will see how he develops in few years, if he develops at all...

He's only going to keep getting better and better... I say that because he's got a very high work rate.
Just wished he had a bit more technique.

Someone remarked he's more like a foreign based Korean than a Korean in Korea. This is because he was born and I think also raised for a while in Germany. Yup, by playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, Cha is playing for his home team.

whats up with all these hatin, he HAS developed more skills since the world cup, he has gotten a better body. His ball control has gotten much better, he doesn't just run around all the time with no intent, he actually thinks now about what is best to do, hes mentally stronger, hes full of confidence now and he brings energy to the team.

This guy has what it takes to be a good striker, hes got the speed, body, look (kinda), and hes now starting to show progress from playing in germany. Even in the Frankfurt matches Cha was always active buggin the hell out of the defense but couldnt finish. HE IS IMPROVING AND HE WILL ONLY GET FREAKN BETTER so be patient.. :)
