Spent 170 million in 2003, 160 million in 2004, 90 million in 2005, back then that was funny money. Shaun Wright Phillips at over 30 mi. was insane. 40 something mil.for Shevchenko for a team that had Drogba.

Back then they were spending way more than anybody else.

I don't disagree, just saying we haven't been financially the first option on the list since the beginning of the 2000s.

They were spending more for overrated players and kept buying. And I wouldn't call them vastly outspending Madrid for superstars either.

What we bought vs what they bought:

Hey, at least Gravesen was uselful for a while. Pablo Garcia was a brought just so the club can say they bought a DM.

Chelsea was also rebuilding at tha time while Madrid was more or less set. Of course they were gonna buy a lot of players. Not one of those players they brought were bigger stars at the time than Owen, and Samuel at CB.

Carvalho was absolutely balling, definitely elite.

It's funny that we got several of their "non stars" as contributors later in their career (Carvalho, Essien, Robben)

Wasn't benching any one of Ronaldo or Raul. Regardless of form.

Im still sad that Ruben de la Red had problems...i remember watching him few games...he was one of best players on the pitch...I could easily imagine him playing many years in Madrid

He is playing games that only a small fragment of fans actually cares. His career is irrelevant right now as i just said.

Carvalho was truly a gem. He was just about done when he came to us but his first year was very good.

A shame we got Essien when he was toast. That was one hell of a player.

True, financially no, but some of the best young talent on the planet, and some experienced ones too, ( before so many of our fans disliked him everyone wanted Alaba to come to us, not to mention Rudiger and Tbo), are still choosing us despite the huge financial incentives out there,

As I’ve noted many times it’s not like they come to Madrid to play for peanuts, there’s still money on offer here, but with the added bonus that you get to play for the biggest most storied club in club football, and you have a chance at winning the biggest and best team an individual awards, we just have to keep winning to maintain that, and I think at this moment the club is in a decent place to achieve that if our younger players click as a unit, they seem determined to do just that.

Random question.... what do you guys think of Trent AA as a Real Madrid right back candidate? I understand he has some defensive issues and got torched by Vini every time we met...but who doesn't ?

What I'm thinking about is potential offensive output on the right side....could be special given the quality of his passing and delivery...

With some good coaching and Fede to have his back the way he protects Dani now...and it could be interesting...... I mean he can't be worse than Marcelo defensively lol...but we got by and THRIVED lol

Is Trent almost a bit underrated these days?

    What do you guys think?....

Trent isn’t underrated at all. You’re underrating Marcelo’s defensive game though if you think he’s on par with Trent. I’m not talking about the post 30/31 year old Marcelo that quickly became washed up.

I’d probably take a gamble on a free transfer.

Trent underrated? Bro, the man is super overrated because he's English and a Scouser. He started off the season poorly and I believe he directly cost his team 2 goals in the first 2 EPL games.

IMO he can be an asset in transition and switching play + long balls when he's focused but he seldom is, usually he lacks sharpness and aggressiveness, sometimes he's down right lazy.

Perez's trumpet boy JFD saying that the club has been targeting Alphonso Davies for more than a year and he's the prime target in 2024. Nothing new there but should he be our priority given our clear deficiencies?

JFD himself mentioned that RM can only go for 1 Galactico each year (this summer it was Jude). If we sign Davies, a tough operation with Bayern that'll potentially cost us €80-100mil, what happens to our deferred top priorities? CF and RB?

We don't know how Courtois situation will be after the ACL, the same goes for Militao. Kroos and Modric are likely leaving (Ceballos, too probably). We will need a backup GK as Lunin's contract expires. Alaba will be 32. To sum up, we might need multiple signings next summer partially because Perez has been putting off key reinforcements in critical areas. I don't see that happening if we sign Davies.

And no, Mbappe (assuming he doesn't renew lol) is not free, we will have to pay him +€150mil in signing bonus.

Again, I love Davies but is he truly the signing that we need?

But we have 2 LBs at the moment, Fran Garcia who just brought back (big potential and imo will explode under right coaching) and Mendy who we probably won't be able to sell due to his declining performances, recurrent injuries and relatively high wages.

Remember, for the RB situation the club's rhetoric was we already Carvajal (32 in Jan) and Vasquez (a RW).

True but he's on loan till 2027.

I think we have bigger issues that need a immediate response from the club and imo the LB position is not at the top of that list.

Owen did well for the way he was used, I always thought he deserved a bigger role

My answer would be TAA is no Marcelo with the ball and worse than Marcelo without it, we suffered with Marcelo against the best teams and personally I wouldn’t want to go back to that for a player who IMO cannot be compared to Marcelo on the ball, I’d much rather stick with Dani
