Portugal used to be part of the Kingdom of Galicia but gained independence in the 12th century. The Portuguese and Galician language are very closely related and in ancient times were the same language. Now I my question how much do the Portuguese and Galicians differ?
Having roots 30 mins from Galicia and spending a lot of time there, not very close at all. The language has touches of Portuguese but still sounds predominately Castillian. That and they act like they don't understand a word of Portuguese. At least this is my experience with people in Vigo.
