Searching for news I realized how good we have it in the NYC market. San Jose is so bad that they don't ever list the quakes as a team, while they cover north bay teams over 1 to 2 hours away. That's pretty bad. Perhaps quake fans need to write a letter to the editor and threaten to boycott their paper? http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/
I get the MSG Soccer Report out here in Pasadena. There is a Spanish language Galaxy show here on TV but at the worst time possible. Saturdays at 1 PM which is when Soccer Saturday starts (dumb). Other than the radio, there's not much at all. The local TV stations will give the Galaxy score at the end of the sports segment but that's it except for KCAL 9 who does Galaxy broadcasts, and they sometimes do features on the team. We are home to the King of the Euro-snobs, Grahame Jones at the LA Times but there are a couple of "decent" newspaper writers here but the stuff is pretty much buried and limited.
As far as I can tell though, the MetroStars are the only MLS team that does not have English-language radio.
If anyone needs emails for any paper in an MLS city, check out Jim's Media thread in his guestbook. It is very impressive. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40480&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
The Metros TV coverage is really good though. Between the Metros Soccer Report and MetroStars Gamenight we get relatively comprehensive coverage of the team on MSG. We even get excerpts from the post game press conference which are informative. MSG does such a good job with the Metros that last year their ratings were higher than those of the N.Y. Islanders games. Not exactly Earth-shaking ratings but progress nonetheless.
I agree with you that they get relatively excellent coverage, but at the same time the Metros are hardly mentioned outside of telecasts and postgame SportsDesk. Besides commercials for Soccer Saturday, the Metros still get very little mention on the network's main programs. For example, when they had Bradley and company do Talk of Our Town, they had Cangialosi do the broadcast and not Daughtry and Wischusen. That to me is a sign that the old guard still dominates the network and is still loathe to touch soccer with a ten-foot pole. They're even loathe to touch hockey (except the regular Islanders and Rangers television crew, of course), let alone soccer. That aside, I'm always pleased that they cover the Metros on a decent basis. It's important to get on radio, I think. I don't know about you but I don't spend a good deal of Saturday nights at home. If I'm on the road, I'd like to tune in to local teams, and that includes the MetroStars.
It's wonderful to be at a bar and look up at a televion and see that Metros Soccer Report on and know that for the next 30 minutes people will be exposed to the Metros, and at the same time I get to see some highlights & interviews. This show alone will do more in advertising for the metros than the tards in the front office over at giants stadium. By the way the guys on world soccer weekly have a show in LA that is broadcast on AM 620 in NY on monday nights at 11:00 pm , they also have a website, they cover mls and euro games. Also on Mon nights at 6pm there's the soccer fanatics radio show out of Lansing, Michigan on channel z they broadcast over the interent, they cover mls and most american soccer news. I've been hard pressed to find any other radio or video media on the internet other than these two.
I suppose it's a waste of time, here in New York, to think that Mike & the MadDog on WFAN and YES could devote a lousy half-hour or so to MLS and the MetroStarts each week. Even if they don't know anything about soccer (which they don't), there's nothing stopping them from having a guest phone in (DellaCamera, Mathis or even Bradley!) and talk about the team and the league so they can learn something about it and maybe get a few people out there intrigued. If this were done on a regular basis on a Monday or Tuesday, maybe some of us could tune in and be ready to call and show Francesa and Russo we will listen if they give the sport a few minutes of air time. It's something that will never happen, but I wanted to get it off my chest.
