Below I have summarized statistics for all MLS teams for the past three seasons (2000-02). I've also included stats for the entire history of the league, even though the early years include the dreaded shoot-out (and hence the 1-point shoot-out win - I can't believe they ever used that idiotic scoring system!). I compiled a similar list after 1/4 of the season was gone, and thought the 3/4 point was a good time to update the stats. The results in both cases have been sorted by points per game (PPG). Interesting points: 1) DCU is still the only team in MLS history with less than 1 PPG. 2) CHI and LA stayed at the top, NY moved way up, while DC fell to the bottom. MLS accomplished their mission of destroying the dynasty and ensuring "big market" teams are at the top of the "table". Bastards. 3) Yes, we really, really, really very much suck. (Note: I tried using an HTML table, but that was giving me all kinds of problems. I cheated by using a 'code' block for easy formatting. Anyone have tips/tricks for using tables on BS?) Code: 2000-2002 Team Totals Team GP W L T Points PPG CHI 80 41 24 15 138 1.725 LA 78 38 24 16 130 1.667 MIA 58 28 20 10 94 1.621 NY 79 39 32 8 125 1.582 KC 81 35 26 20 125 1.543 DAL 79 33 30 16 115 1.456 SJ 79 32 31 16 112 1.418 CLB 80 32 33 15 111 1.388 COL 80 28 37 15 99 1.238 NE 80 27 40 13 94 1.175 TB 59 20 33 6 66 1.119 DC 79 22 45 12 78 0.987 All-Time Team Totals Team GP W L T Points PPG CHI 144 79 50 15 242 1.681 LA 206 117 73 16 345 1.675 DC 207 106 89 12 294 1.420 DAL 207 100 91 16 286 1.382 CLB 208 96 97 15 277 1.332 MIA 122 56 56 10 158 1.295 KC 209 93 96 20 267 1.278 TB 187 83 98 6 235 1.257 COL 208 89 104 15 258 1.240 NY 207 89 110 8 253 1.222 SJ 207 91 100 16 251 1.213 NE 208 80 115 13 219 1.053 Your thoughts? I'm thinking of analyzing attendance vs. record and sensitivity of attendance to changes in the teams records. Can I mathematically determine which teams have the best fans, and which have fair-weather fans? Would it mean anything? Hmmm....
Interesting that within a couple of hours of posting this MLS has a "weighted" draft that lands a player in NY.
I thought it always used to be how bad the team had sucked over the previous season. I don't think anybody has sucked as bad as us. I don't get how we don't go first in a weighted draft. I can only figure that we must have passed or something because there is no way that we don't get first pick.
Because it's a weighted lottery. A game of chance, and the chances are the Metros or Galaxy will always be picked out of the hat.
Does anyone know the franchise record for longest winless streak? Is it our current 8-game skid? I think we can lay solid claim to have been the best team in league history over 4 seasons ('96-'99). On the other end of the scale, I believe San Jose missed the playoffs for 3 or 4 consecutive seasons. So while we're not there yet, we may also be able to soon claim the title of worst team in league history over a 4 year period (2000-'03) if we can miss the playoffs again next year.
I think KC had 9 consecutive losses in 1999, and I think the Revs lost the first 8 last year. We've at least picked up three ties in the current winless streak. Dave
What strikes me first is the fact of how few MLS Cups the best teams in the regular season-percentage wise have. You can look at either list and see this. Look at the all-time list: LA? No MLS Cups. Chicago? 1 MLS Cup. Dallas? Not even a final appearance. Then look at the 00-02 totals- You have to go to the fifth best team (KC) to find a Cup winner. SJ is the 7th best team on this list. What does this mean? Probably just like in college in the early 90's, Bruce Arena just flat out knows how to win championships so much better than his peers it ain't funny. People think Chicago is the best organization but they don't hold a candle to what Arena did.
