True. True. Did you out of curiosity check the other ones? I agree with your conclusion. Though, since I don't have the tools to verify who owns particular domains, I would be curious to find out of MLS/AEG have already bought out their possible names in order to prevent cyber squatting. You are right. If I wanted to prevent previous sleuthing by Bigsoccer posters, this would be one major way.
interestingly enough if chosen Houston 1836 wouldn't even be the first sports team in the world to name themselves after an 1836 city founding -- http://www.adelaide36ers.com/about/
That's interesting. The Sixers. Hmmm. Well. If Houston gets cheerleaders like the NLB ones: They can give the Black Power fist e/a time they score.
No, but an illegal immigrant would sure as hell have to go through it to make it to Houston (unless he did it on a boat). I went to the border crossing at Big Bend nat'l park out in west Texas, and there was no border patrol there. I figure they thought, "if you're willing to cross the Chihuahuan desert to get to America, you've got just he kind of initiative we can use."
LOL, perhaps if the owners are already leaning towards Houston 1836 it makes sense to lump that name in with a host of pathetic names as competition. Its an easy way of making their choice look like the best of a bad bunch. I mean why on earth would they exclude Houston Republic, which IMO would be a pretty good name? Perhaps because the fix is in for 1836? This is all speculation, but the houston1836.com domain info posted above is interesting news if true.....
Interestingly, Houston 1836 is not among the proposed names on the Chronicle's webpage that is linked to the MLS name the team sweepstakes: http://www.chron.com/sports/soccer/ I don't like the name Houston 1836. I want something that will appel to the mass market, not just a small core of soccer traditionalists. Thus, I hope Apollos or LoneStars is the name they use.
I don't understand the fans here, first the league gets bashed for using non traditional names and then they get bashed for being low rent copies of traditional names, can't win. That is how you end up with names like blue jackets!! I like 1836 it sounds good. And if you have not learned the mass apeal did not work in the begging and won't work now. You guys think any team in their right mind would now be named the magpies or the lillywhites?
Eh. It just don't jibe with Houston. Houston=Desert. Anywho. If they come through the Valley. The circle around Falfurrias, walk the desert, and once North of Falfurrias, get on a bus, and Houston bound.
You could call the team the Houston Armadillos -- which is cute and local and carries its armour ever-ready -- and the name might register with the mass market, but the only people who will come to the games will be soccer fans. And the name will sound lame to them. By all means pander to those who don't give a shlt about soccer, while handing your hardcore supporters a good laugh. That's an MLS tradition; why should you be any different?
You nailed it right there. Actually Houston 1836 FC works for both soccer purists and American traditionalists. Its an honest to goodness soccer team name, but the media and general public can nickname the team the 36ers or just the Sixers as they wish. Everybody wins with Houston 1836.
RE: domain registrations for the names on the mlsnet poll. checking for houston[insert name here].com domain registrations, There is a group of names all registered, like houston1836.com, through a private domain admin service on 12/22/2005 as follows: Bulls Buffalos Eagles Gatos 1836 There is another group of names all registered since the move was announced on 12/15/2005 by other parties as follows: Generals on 12/19/2005 by Southland Window Fashions Lonestars on 12/16/2005 by Sergio Zanazzi Stallions on 12/16/2005 by Just Add Cake Party Rentals Toros on 12/15/2005 by Randy Sim The rest of the names have all been owned previously to the announcement as follows: Apollos since 11/30/2001 Americans since 12/10/1999 Mustangs since 4/5/2002 Stars since 12/23/2004 Interpret this as you wish.
Seems like they learned something since FC Dallas was uncovered within 24 hours last year. I reckon you can rule out anything but the first five, unless they want to deal with the guy at Just Add Cake Party Rentals, who I understand is an ESPN apologist. Did you check .net as well?
