I know the FC thing is traditional, but I think SC is better for an American club; whether it stands for Sports Club or Soccer Club doesn't matter.

I voted for Houston Rovers. IMO, they should add "FC", to make it Houston Rovers FC. I like the sound of it, and it becomes more "Euro-traditionalist." (I know I'm going to take some flack for that one.) Also, the idea of Houston Rovers FC v FC Dallas is starting to sound very exciting.

To synthesize a few ideas that others have already suggested, the name should be

Apollo XI / Apollo 11 / Apollo Eleven

(as in the number of players, and the mission that reached the moon)

It would be good to find a way to put the word Houston into the team name, but this is just too perfect to pass up.

I don't like Rovers or Rangers or obvious European ripoffs (like Real Salt Lake). Besides, for those of you who don't know, DFW's baseball team is the Texas Rangers, so that'd be weird.

I like the idea of naming it Apollo. Apollo Houston, but just refer to it simply as "Apollo" always. A poster here here also suggested Helios, which I rather like. Houston IS quite sunny most of the time.

There's got to be a happy medium. The naming conventions for the other major American sports just won't work for the MLS - they're too "American" and all the good names are taken anyways. For instance, look at the team names for the WUSA or WNBA - rubbish. MLS has done a pretty good job of avoiding this, with the exception of Wizards and Rapids, IMO. On the other side of the coin, obvious European copycat jobs are lame, too. Real Salt Lake? Not fooling anyone.

Other sports team names from Houston

Doing a couple quick tradmark searches turns up a shitload of registered team names from Houston. Most are now dead. Many were probably never used. But the sheer number is amazing.

    HOUSTON TEXANS
    HOUSTON TOROS
    HOUSTON WRANGLERS
    HOUSTON ROUGHRIDERS
    HOUSTON ROUSTABOUTS
    HOUSTON COLT 45'S
    HOUSTON ROUGHNECKS
    HOUSTON ENERGY
    HOUSTON HURRICANES
    HOUSTON THUNDERBEARS
    HOUSTON STORMCATS
    HOUSTON BOBCATS
    HOUSTON WILDCATS
    HOUSTON CHALLENGERS
    HOUSTON APOLLOS
    HOUSTON GENERALS
    HOUSTON TEXIANS
    HOUSTON STALLIONS
    HOUSTON WILDCATTERS
    HOUSTON OILERS
    HOUSTON GAMBLERS
    HOUSTON HOTSHOTS
    HOUSTON DYNAMOS
    HOUSTON ROCKETS
    HOUSTON ASTROS

BTW, my search also revealed that FC Dallas trademarked "FC Texas." They even trademarked the new Dallas badge with 'FC Texas' in the place of 'FC Dallas.' Looks like they covered their bases.

My only point was that people seemed so proud of the Rangers name for Texas, I mean there was a huge picture posted on this thread.

Not to mention the fact that there are better names for the Houston team that have already been posted on this thread.

As for my use of the term "racism" rather than "sectarianism" when referring to anti-Catholic bias in Scotland, I was just trying to keep the post simple. I would be glad to discuss the semantics with people, but it just didn't seem that necessary.

Whats the word on when the Houston website is gonna have the real poll. Will it be sooner than later?

and lets face it Houston Rovers is by far one of the better choices for the team name or who knows now is a better time than any to start using SC over FC as this is Major League Soccer and we call our sport soccer so therefore i think teams should start adopting SC for soccer club following their name

Yes, most Texans are very proud of the Rangers name. What's your point? Are we not supposed to be?

Well, considering that Houston is near the water how about the Sea Bears? :D This should get that lucrative SpongeBob demographic. (For those of you unfamiliar there was a SB episode where the boys are out camping, and as you know "Fairy Tales and Sea Bears Are Real.")
