The format for the 2023 NWSL season has been announced:

    https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/nwsl-announces-2023-season-schedule-footprint

The regular season will start on March 25. Teams will play home-and-away against the rest of the league for a total of 22 games. All of those games will be on weekends. The league says they will minimize games during the Women's World Cup. The regular season will end in October with 6 teams again advancing to the playoffs. The Final will be November 11.

The NWSL is going to keep the Challenge Cup but it will have games played mid-week during the regular season. There will be a group stage with three groups of four playing a double round robin. The group winners plus the best 2nd place team will advance to a single game knockout tournament September 6 and 9.

They do not say how the groups will be determined. If they are geographic then the Dash will probably be in a group with KC, Chicago, and Louisville.

All teams will have a minimum of 14 home games in the two competitions.

    Few Dash relevant excerpts:

The report also provided details relating to Houston Dash GM and manager James Clarkson. Clarkson was placed on temporary suspension in April 2022 after the league received complaints from players that he engaged in "ongoing emotional misconduct and insensitivity."

The investigation revealed that a majority of players considered Clarkson "fair" and felt that his behavior didn't rise to the level of abuse or emotional misconduct.

But the investigators concluded otherwise, citing an incident in which Clarkson berated the team because he thought that some of them had been out drinking the night before an exhibition game played at high altitude and that players felt it created a culture of "anxiety and fear."

The report singled out former Houston Dash manager Vera Pauw and former OL Reign coach Farid Benstiti, saying "Pauw appeared to want to control and micromanage players' diets and exercise regimens even when her weight loss directives were inconsistent with sports medicine best practices; for example, players reported that Pauw discouraged them from eating fruit because of its sugar content. Players reported that Pauw's comments affected a teammate struggling with an eating disorder."

    You beat me to it.

The report basically states what I had thought all along, that some players were upset with James' management style. I realize that during a discussion about the Dash years ago, someone stated that women players needed to be treated differently than men when it comes to criticism etc.

In a statement, the day the report was issued the Dynamo/Dash said the following:
“We apologize to players, present and former, who were subject to misconduct by James Clarkson and 2018 head coach Vera Pauw,”

Here's the summary of the report

"James Clarkson (Houston Dash, Head Coach and General Manager, 2019-)

    9. James Clarkson communicated with players in a manner that created anxiety and fear for multiple players.Interviewees expressed that Clarkson failed to recognize when his ineffective communication was detrimental to players emotional well being, though many players also stated that Clarkson was tough but fair.In one instance,Clarkson suspected that players had been drinking alcohol the night before a game,so he convened the players and reprimanded them in a manner that left multiple players feeling scared and attacked. In his interview by the Joint Investigative Team,Clarkson acknowledged having this meeting with players, but reported that he did not single out or attack any players. In another instance,a player reported that Clarkson angrily asked her,How the f*ck (apparently BS censors profanity) are you so unprofessional, when she had to come out of a game due to an injury.Clarkson's comment left the player crying and visibly upset.Clarkson denied making this comment, but witnesses corroborated that Clarkson was visibly upset and frustrated at the player, and that the player was upset. Although Clarkson advocated for the development of a mental health program at the Dash,he also demonstrated insensitivity towards players mental health in his interactions with them.In multiple instances,Clarkson failed to understand how his conduct impacted players"

    and

"On another occasion, after the detention of WNBA player Brittney Griner and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Clarkson approved conveying to a player’s agent a contract offer from a Russian club, without acknowledging or showing sensitivity to the risks that would accompany playing in Russia."

So the coach now has a responsibility to provide pro's and con's of transfers? What a joke - surely that's the role of the player and players agent. Furthermore all Clarkson really had to do was to advise the player not to try to take any controlled substances to Russia.

Regarding the player that came out of the game due to the injury, it's interesting that the report goes into detail as to what happened. The player had injured her ankle, but dressed for the game because she wanted to start. She was put on as a sub and had to come out within a few minutes due to the ankle injury. To my mind, Clarkson was understandably pissed off because he had not been informed of the injury, and wasted a sub.

Clarkson needs to file a lawsuit over this

Heat - Kitchen comes to mind. Can't wait for the report on MLS and the hurt feelings.

Pauw sounds like she was a complete PITA to play under.

Perhaps, but the blame lies with the people who failed to do due diligence and hired her in the first place.

I'm not sure what level of due diligence is going to uncover the fact that she'd be interfering with sports dieticians and conditioning coaches (maybe I'm making a leap assuming the Dash had these in 2018? They do now, but most of them have a start date in 2019). That sounds like something that only comes out from this type of thing. I'd generally expect in a closed community like pro-women's soccer for rumors to spread, but did she have much/if any overlap with NWSL players pre-coaching the Dash? Just hard to see how they'd figure this out ahead of hiring her.

    A few thoughts about this:

    • Given the amount of serious, legitimate issues the league has faced I can understand an over correction happening with the investigations they’ve had. I think that’s probably what happened here.
    • Clarkson deserves his day in court. I’m not saying he does or doesn’t have a case but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
    • He never should have been the Dash head coach in the first place. This all could have been avoided if they hired a qualified candidate in the first place. Instead they hired an in house failed boys youth coach to lead professional grown women. And not just that, one that had been a failure within the same organization already (source: the name of the thread on this board regarding Dynamo youth development).
In the end we have a situation where nothing is really better or improved in the outcome.

decided to look back and see if Clarkson hire reaction was as poor as I remember. My reasoning for doing this isn’t about kicking a man while he’s down, it’s about the point that he never should have been hired in the first place. It was a massive mistake that made things worse for everyone in the end. Also, I don’t blame Clarkson for taking the job because 1. It was probably going to be the only professional head coaching shot he would get, men or women. 2. It was a positive for him for a while until it wasn’t. He went from being failed boys coach to professional women’s coach on an upswing. It was a good case of apparently being in the right place at the right time.

Yep. Hired several weeks ago. Presumably they've been waiting until after the NWSLPA report was released so they could say, "because of this, Clarkson will not be back" whereas in reality that decision was made way back when he was suspended.

Which, by the way, addressing @DonJuego comment/question on the other thread about why would anyone want to coach in NWSL - Sam has been an assistant in NWSL since day one of the league. Never had any issues, never had any player complaints. Is viewed with nothing but respect by players and staff around the league.

Your overall point is a good one. Having agreed with you on your general point that plenty of coaches will want to work in the NWSL I think your view carries the day. On this point here however, this guy has never been a head coach making the tough decisions that result in hurt feelings, busted careers, and players with an axe to grind.

Fair enough, though he has been OL Reign head coach on an interim basis for about a quarter of the season in 2021 when their head coach was fired. Clearly 6 games on an interim basis is nowhere near the same as head coach on a full-time basis.

This great news for the NWSL.

I was hoping that a new NWSL expansion team would be located in the Dallas area to provide the Dash with an in-state rival. May in the next few years.

I feel like there’s a lot more momentum in Austin for NWSL but anyone who is more in the know can provide a better perspective. Though NWSL in Dallas would be interesting if they don’t play at Frisco’s stadium and they can play elsewhere in the metroplex getting a different local audience.
