Oh, this is going to be a bitch-slapping. Honduras just lost at home to El Salvador. There's no way they're going to turn around three days later and 70 degrees colder and hang with a pissed off USA team.
Extreme Weather in Football - FIFPRO World Players' Union There is no specific guidance by FIFA on extreme cold. FIFPRO recommends that training and matches be cancelled and rescheduled when the air temperature is less than -15 degrees Centigrade and when the Wind Chill Temperature is less than -27 degrees Centigrade. -15 degrees Centigrade is 5 degrees Farenheit. The forecast for kickoff is 4 degrees. Oops. Would they actually go so far as to postpone or reschedule?
Nice to see Centigrade making a comeback. Usually metric temperatures are reported in Celsius. That actually wasn't very cold, only a few degrees below freezing. The issue there was seeing the lines, especially for the penalty box.
And I was on the record saying the Snow Classico SHOULD have been stopped. That field was basically unplayable. But this is different. There does come a point where the temperatures become physically dangerous. And this isn’t like football, where guys can come in and out and have heaters on the sidelines and put on coats and blankets and add layers underneath their pads and stuff.
I'm in Minneapolis now and scared me to think that it's going to be 15+ degrees colder tomorrow for the game because it's already pretty miserable out. Snowing sideways. I think that there is no way that it would be cancelled/postponed at this point even though I'd probably call it unsafe. This weather/temp has been known for a week+ and it would have already happened by now or Honduras would have already protested it.
As I recall, European dates when Sweden, Russia, and Ukraine are involved were colder than this on the regular. UEFA hasn't called any that I'm aware of...not solely for cold, anyway.
Zenit v Chelsea was -14 C, in December. It's December in St. Petersburg. How much do you want to bet it was "-14"?
There have folks floating the idea of a change of venue to the Vikings indoor stadium. I don't know how realistic that is, but would at least be able to play the game on the date reserved for it. But, as others have said, most likely this just goes ahead and is bad for both teams. No idea why this one was scheduled there in the first place. It's a net negative for the home team in my estimation.
Vikings stadium… well we clearly perform so well on artificial turf so…. Absolutely a net negative, we already play too slow. And Honduras has nothing to lose, even though they are abysmal could be dangerous
I have to wonder how much the novelty factor played into the decision to play in Minneapolis in February. Y'all have got to admit: the media is buzzin'. Granted, they couldn't have predicted a major winter weather system bringing below-average temps to the city, nor a USNMT squad that is severely underperforming. A large part of me thinks that if the weather was average (~25) and the Nats hadn't just lost to Canada, no one would be spilling this much ink to ask "wwwhhhhyyyy."
I see that the Zenit stadium has a retractable roof. From the highlights, it didn't look all that cold inside the stadium. No visible breath from players. Players in short sleeves (some of them). No one wearing gloves. You sure the roof wasn't closed?
No idea, actually. Just went by the match report at uefa.com, which said "-14". I certainly would have closed the roof if I were them.
im curious if there is any history of a venue change late due to weather. Can’t imagine it’s easy if allowed at all
A case of USSF outsmarting themselves. They made no bones about wanting cold weather venues for these 2 games. As far as I can tell, nobody much aside from Columbus and Mineapolis bid on thesm or was ever considered. It has worked for.them ever since 2001. But they went to the well a bit too often and now they're in a tough spot.
I still think we’ll be fine. LaMacchia’s right; we just lost to Canada, so everyone’s back to worrying. None of the complaints/concerns/worries about the conditions are coming from the team. They’re coming from people who watch them or cover them. As for it being a “net negative,” well, I couldn’t disagree more. Honduras will literally be experiencing a 75° temperature difference between two matches over four days. Whatever effect it has on us will pale in comparison to the effect it will have on them.
