Allen Hopkins is one of the best commentators in my opinion. Right on Allen! lol

Good article. Nothing new in it, we're all excited. The last line comparing Victoria Street to San Siro is a bit far-fetched. It will certainly be the best the USA has to offer in SSS. Still, it's hard to imagine those other stadia being road venues to their home countries in the same way VS will be when USA eventually play MEX there.

This is true. Even if it is a new stadium, it's still Los Angeles. Mexican supporters will still find a way to get the majority of the tickets.

Possible, but it depends a lot on who would handle the ticket sales. If there is a large enough LAG season ticket base, and if the season ticket holders are given some priority purchase rights, then there may be more US fans than you think - although there are a fair number of Tri supporters among the LAG faithful, so maybe that's a wash.

Am I the only one who doesn't want this stadium nicknamed "in the English tradition"? Not that Victoria Street is a terrible name, but I would rather the HDC have it's own distinct image apart from English stadiums. Hell, call it the Woodshed or something...

because "Victoria Street" is the wimpiest, most pantywaist name you could have chosen. Why not just complete the disgrace and name it "Veronica's Tea Party?"

No need to follow the English tradition. No need to nickname it Victoria St. Eurosnobs give MLS and U.S. no respect as it is so why should we bother about their traditions. Let's start our own traditions.

That's my point exactly. This is so obviously wannabe-ism no matter what the supporters of this embarassment say.

Which American fans nicknamed it Victoria Street? American fans from London? In that case, I can't wait until the Fire moves back to Lake Shore Drive later this year.

Of course, I guess I could call the stadium whatever I want and start my own movement...

    bethany...

all this is just people crying over spilt milk... they'd whine over anything

they don't matter... victoria's street was started by galaxy fans... that a sportswriter wrote that it was started by english fans (i'd say hello connolly or wahl... but i can't remember which one said it) is absurd

sure it fits with english stadium nicknames... it also fits with u.s. stadium nicknames, and i'm sure you could go the world over and find that giving the stadium a nickname belonging to a nearby landmark/area is fairly common (chavezz ravine, foxboro, the swamp, etc.)

people are just whining because they can

what stadium do you think of when i say waveland avenue?

Interestingly it seems American fans are quite happy with stadium names ending in "Park". Does that imply a name ending "St." is typically English, but ending a name "Park" is American?

Of the 92 Pro teams in the English League
A list of all the 'Parks'...
    Aston Villa - Villa Park
    Blackburn - Ewood Park
    Brentford - Griffin Park
    Cardiff - Ninian Park
    Carlisle - Brunton Park
    Crystal Palace - Selhurst Park
    Derby - Pride Park
    Everton - Goodison Park
    Exeter - St James Park
    Grimsby - Blundell Park
    Hartlepool - Victoria Park
Hull City - Boothferry Park (until 2 months ago)
    Newcastle - St James Park
    Oldham - Boundry Park
    Plymouth - Home Park
    Portsmouth - Fratton Park
    Port Vale - Vale Park
Rushden & Diamonds - Nene Park
    Scunthorpe - Glanford Park
    Stockport - Edgeley Park
    Tranmere - Prenton Park
    Wimbledon - Selhurst Park
    Wycombe - Adams Park

A full list of all the stadiums ending "Street"
    Boston - York Street
    ..err..that's it.

So tell me again, which one of the two is an American way of naming things and which is typically English?

To be fair, there are 15 "Roads" and 4 "Lanes", but "Park" still wins by a long stretch. But don't forget, if you were doing everything the American way, the field would be 50 x 100 and have lines every 10m.

Or 53 1/3 x 120 (yds) if you are scoring at home.

An unusually cogent post from a Fire fan (Smiley).

Actually, the fact that the name "Victoria Street" seems to bug the hell out of some people makes it even more fun to use that name!

The first time I saw the name "Victoria Street" in print was on the LAG listserve mailing list, and I am pretty sure that long time BS poster kyledane was the originator. That was more than a year before Home Depot surfaced as a corporate sponsor, so the name was pretty much in place among GaLAxy fans before Home Depot showed up.
