A gay democrat latina was elected sheriff of Dallas. Sheriff! Can you believe it? The Reeps even played the GAY CARD, and she still won.

"Valdez won 51 percent of the vote, overcoming the opposition of the unions that represent the 1,785 employees in the Sheriff's Department and an eleventh-hour alarm sounded by Chandler and the conservative Texas Eagle Forum about her acceptance of campaign contributions from the Washington-based Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund. "

Of course, there's a great liberal tradition in Texas: LBJ, Ann Richards, Molly Ivans, Jim Hightower, etc. So perhaps there's some hope that once the shrub retires to Kennybunkport, Dems may yet reclaim Texas.

Okay, that's a huge stretch. But this pleases me to no end. I hope this lady's got a thick skin, because I can just picture the religious nut jobs coming out in force to show their displeasure with so sinful a person being sheriff.

What does Dallas have to do with "the South"?

And by the way, if you were heartened by that, it'll be tempered by this:

In my congressional district, in the next county over from Dallas County, the Democrats didn't even bother running someone against the Republican incumbent.

Bad news, Mike. You're part French, or so the guys on "NOVA" told me last night.

A gay latina sheriff in Dallas?

Ok, that sounds very exciting, to say the least. But I was hoping you meant that there was hope for Argentina.

    I guess it wasn't an obvious-enough troll.
