Hong Kong land North Korea in horror 2019 Asian Cup qualifying draw
Coach Kim Pan-gon says his side’s group, which also features Malaysia and Lebanon, is possibly the toughest of all

    UPDATED : Monday, 23 January, 2017, 10:56pm

    Chan Kin-wa

Hong Kong landed possibly the worst draw of any team in the qualifiers for the 2019 Asian Cup and will have to take on North Korea, the nation that coach Kim Pan-gon wanted to avoid.

At last night’s official draw in Abu Dhabi, the two teams, which last clashed in the East Asian Football Championships second round in Hong Kong in November, were pooled together in group B, which also features Malaysia and Lebanon.

The Koreans beat Hong Kong 1-0 in the match before making it to the final of the East Asian event that included regional heavyweights South Korea, Japan and China.

North Korea were in pot one of the draw while Hong Kong were in the second tier.

A total of 24 teams were divided into four levels in the qualifiers in accordance with their latest Fifa rankings.

The top two teams from each of the six groups will reach the finals in the United Arab Emirates in two years.
“This is possibly the most tough group we are getting, especially North Korea and Lebanon,” said Kim. “Our target is to finish the group in second position and hopefully we can challenge the top team of the group.

“The qualifiers will take one year to finish and we need faith from the players to get focused.”

Kim said the first two games would be crucial – they travel to Lebanon before playing host to North Korea – as they need at least two points from both games.

Twenty-four teams will contest the Asian Cup after the Asian Football Confederation expanded the tournament from 16 teams in Australia in 2015.

The 12 teams competing in the third round of Asian zone qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia have already qualified for the event.

Chan Siu-Ki finally secured his move to Hong Kong Pegasus from South China, after the two clubs agreed a HK$200,000 transfer fee. Hong Kong Pegasus's Macanese striker Leong Ka-Hang may get less playing time after this.

Chan's move means South China, after Ryan Griffiths also left, will be left with just two strikers, Lam Hok-Hei and Nikolai Komazec. They should be in the market for one or two strikers.

Kitchee and HKFA earned nearly HK$1.9 million in gate receipts, plus sponsorship from Nike, but Kitchee boss Ken Ng said the Lunar New Year Cup was a loss.

I think he really ought to lower the ticket prices. HK$380 for the most expensive ticket and HK$180 for the third tier is really asking for a little too much, given the clubs involved and the capacity of the stadium.

He could lower the most expensive ticket to $200 and the cheapest ticket to about HK$100, which may mean another 5-6,000 fans could show up. Then he could have a much better atmosphere inside the stadium and still earn the same gate receipts.

Liverpool legends Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott help launch ‘most diverse’ Soccer Sevens yet

England and Liverpool greats Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott helped launch this year’s Hong Kong Football Club Citi Soccer Sevens on Tuesday as clubs from an impressive selection of leagues were confirmed to take part.

Teams from England, Scotland, Germany, Italy and France are set appear at the May seven-a-side tournament.
“We are delighted to announce that this year’s HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens will be the most diverse in its entire history,” said tournament director Chris Plowman at the launch.

“We will be seeing representation from three of continental Europe’s top leagues in Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga as well as our regular visitors from the English Premier League and Scotland’s Premier League, plus teams from the K-League in South Korea, the J.League in Japan, Australia’s A-League, Singapore and, of course, Hong Kong.”

Last year’s event was won by Aston Villa, who have since been relegated from the EPL, but are expected to return as defending champions. The win was a record sixth for Villa who competed alongside Newcastle United, Leicester City and Stoke City in last year’s edition.

The Soccer Sevens has helped to launch the careers of a host of players including Marc Albrighton, who won the Premier League with Leicester City last season, Jack Grealish, Fraser Forster, Gary Cahill and Glen Johnson, and Keegan said the tournament represented a good opportunity for young players at the highest level.

“From a football point of view it’s good,” he said. “But for a million different reasons, it’s useful. You learn how to behave – it’s a life education – it’s not just football. They have to learn what life is about. They learn so much by going on tour with a team. And these facilities here are fantastic.”

The line-up for this year’s event, the 18th edition of the annual tournament, will be announced in the coming weeks with the tournament taking place between Friday 26 and Sunday 28 May.

Keegan, who alongside McDermott is in Hong Kong as an ambassador for the Hong Kong branch of the Wallsend Boys Club, will host a sportsmen’s dinner at Hong Kong Football Club tomorrow night with the proceeds going to Wallsend Boys Club, who are expanding into Hong Kong.

    Sapling Cup:

South China 1:4 Wofoo Tai Po

South China lost another trophy opportunity. It is effectively out of the running in the league, so the FA Cup will be its only chance.

Southern District 4:2 (a.e.t) Lee Man Rangers

    Eastern Longlions 7:1 R&F Guangzhou

Eastern played with its reserves and still thrashed R&F Guangzhou.

HK Pegasus 0:0 (4:3 penalties) Biu Chun GlorySky

Chan Siu-Ki made his debut for HK Pegasus but unable to find the net. Fortunately the team makes it through to the semis.

Hong Kong Pegasus beat South China both home and away after last night's game with the same scorers.

But South China claims that according to their transfer deal with HK Pegasus, Chan Siu-Ki is not permitted to face them in last night's game. But HK Pegasus said they paid the transfer fee and there is no such conditions in their deal. Will they meet in court for another round?

Hong Kong Pegasus coach Kevin Bond said in the video he took the decision to play Chan Siu-Ki in last night's match against South China.

Hong Kong Pegasus did not commit any infringement by playing Chan Siu-Ki, as he is not under HKFA suspension. It was just a private agreement made between Hong Kong Pegasus and South China. If South China wants to pursue this then they willl have to go to court. Considering the costs involved I doubt Wallace Cheung will bother.

Kai Tak Sports Complex will be seeking funding from the LegCo finance committee later this year. The sports complex includes a 50,000 soccer stadium with a retractable roof, a 5,000 capacity sports ground and a 10k capacity indoor stadium. The stadium plans to hosts 10 big soccer matches a year. The costs of construction will be HK$32 billion. The whole complex will be completed by 2022.
