Cool. I wonder how this will play on the Ref board. Or for that matter, with our more paranoid fans: "see! I told you Kevin Terry always hosed us!!!"
Good. But where's the blown offsides call? In favor of defense? In favor of the offense? Where's the "exact same foul called 5 minutes ago but not called this time?" Or the "would have been a yellow card but he got a yellow 10 minutes ago?"
mlsnet isn't showing it (whatever it is)! http://www.mlsnet.com/content/ doesn't work anymore. Must have been good while it was there!
As a DC fan, I'd lie to see the disallowed penalty kicks stat for Noel Kenny. Any idea if he'll be back this year?
I would expect so. Despite the two bad ratings that ended his season, he is routinely held in high regard by the players and coaches (if not the fans).
Got to say that this is good, referees are part of the game and having a little more info just makes for more intelligent fans.
Is this a result of the new stat company or is this something MLS started doing on thier own? I have a feeling its the former. And as a stat lover, I'm excited about things to come.
Two stats of interest to LA fans right off the bat: Kevin Terry called twice as many PK's in LAG games than in the games of any other team. Does not break those down as to PK's for v. against LA, but that sure is an odd stat. 11 PK's in LAG games v. 5 in the next highest - Coloumbus. Secondly, LAG, with an outstanding won-loss record last year, was under .500 when Kevin Terry was the ref. Hmmmmmm.
Not this fan. That could be becasue when ref's do a good job, people don't notice them. When they do a bad job, people do. I just find it interesting that I actually know that guy by name.
The chart only lists the stats for games involving Columbus and/or LA, the two teams in this game. It doesn't show you how many PKs he called in Kansas City or MetroStars games. The chart doesn't show LA's record in Kevin Terry games last year. These are all-time statistics.
you never miss an opportunity, do you? btw, enjoyed the last issue, though by my count, going by the mls preview articles, we'll have 9 first place teams, and one team that doesn't exist at all (the rapids).
There may well be a simple explanation. If Terry is considered a top ref, they're gonna put him on the biggest games. So he'll get the Gals when they're playing another good team. That plus a lil' random luck could explain it all. Barry Jacobs used to write a comprehensive preview magazine about ACC basketball. UNC and Duke (this was back when UNC was good, now) always used to have worse records with the best refs. But those guys weren't calling many games against Clemson.
Thanks, Noah - I misunderstood the PK stat. As to the "all time" comment, LAG has an all-time winning percentage so the "Hmmm" still goes. IF LA is under .500 when Terry is on the pitch, LA must have a remarkable all-time record when anyone else is doing the games. BTW: I don't suggest this proves Terry is biased against LAG. (Although I do not think he is a very good ref and don't understand his high rating). It is just fun to see what inferences (even unfair ones) can be drawn from the raw numbers.
Fair comment. I guess I can see rewarding a highly rated ref by awarding him playoff or cup games as a bonus. However, I would think that a rotation should be in order for the regular season. No team should get the advantage or disadvantage of seeing any one ref more than any other.
Hah. You should do the writing for the Rapids. That's 2 years in a row Denver's been blanked. If you go by word count though - the Burn are champs. If you go by hot air generated and self-congratulations, it looks like LA wins.
