Per today's Dallas Morning News: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/soccer/stories/051207dnspofcdlede.34d2c90.html Just wondering. Was it Hitchcock who figured it made good sense to spend so much money on our keepers? $330,000 combined Or was Clarke's friendship with Hislop a big factor in the decision to sign the $220k benchwarmer?
You're right. I didn't read the article carefully enough. It's Alan Knight, the GK coach, who seems to have been Hislop's promoter (isn't "bung" the word they use in England for that type of stuff?)
I think "dung" is the word we use for Hislop in America. But in all seriousness, Hislop hasn't been a half bad replacement this season, but seeing how amazing Sala has been tonight I'm glad he's back.
Too much of that word and my Pompey together (leave 'Arry out of it 66... he's notorious).....actually that's just English. That seems to be a big part of the modern game unfortunately. Personal connections go a long way. Nothin' wrong with that until people start getting screwed. It was the Pompey link. It was crap. But Shaka was decent, although grossly overpaid. God bless Dario.
I was outraged when I first read this story....six months ago on 3rd Degree. Still, I can't help but wonder what we could have done with that $220,000. I also am relieved Sala is going to use the fact his backup makes twice his salary as a positive.
Definitely agree on the overpaid part. But Shaka would've been a decent signing for Dario money. Note: Buzz, I'm well familiar with your earlier work on digging up some salary numbers, and really appreciated it. But it was interesting to see the salary numbers discussed in a major news publication (not to mention, I didn't know Dario was being paid $110k -- for some reason, I thought that $80 k was his rumored salary)
consider too then that I hear with bonuses Shaka is closer to $280. Dario was on a low number his first partial season. but his new deal put him in the $100k range that has gone up a bit each year since.

I gotta say, the apparent disparity there between, say, Anthony Wallace and Dominic Oduro is really quite strange. I guess I just don't get it.
well sure, but there are lots of kinds of bonusus. roster bonus on certain dates starts minutes who knows. maybe that info is wrong, but the couple people I heard it from are fairly well in the know.
Dumb question from someone not following the team super-closely this year: Who are "Ibrahim, Abdus" and "Wallace, Anthony" and why are they being paid so much? (am I right in my hope that these are Generation adidas kids, whose salaries don't hit our cap?)
simple. Anthony Wallace is a 17 year old American who is good enough to skip college and go right to prior before he is old enough to even leave high school and is roster protected. Dom is a 22 year old foreign player without a green card who is out of a minor and unheralded college program that costs a YI and perhaps some day a SI.
ok sure. again Wallace is a 18 year old American coming out of the US program and good enough to skip college all together and is roster protected. Burse, while an American is 22 and already out of school. he didn't even play keeper full time until he was about 20. he's also not roster protected. the base line is Ga players are in theory future US national team caliber who are often taking a MLS deal over a foreign contract. The hope is your next Donovan or Beasley comes out of this group. Burse is you hope the next Hartman. A great MLS player.
well of course not. but someone thought shaka was worth a lot. and cooper when he signed that deal fell into the category of young US player, not in the national team pool, that "failed' in Europe. now we all know Cooper had other offers, and we all know he took less money to come play for his home team, perhaps with the hope of getting into the US team... but there are reasons for most of the numbers as they are. contracts end, things change. becaue of the cap a MLS team won't give someone more money jsut cause they like the player and want to treat him nice. Look at DeRo and Joseph, two players that deserve way more money.
Its my contention that the reason MLS paid EJ stupid money is they believed he would soon be sold to a european team and that MLS would come out great on the deal.....of course they're still waiting for the euro deal.....
