The Hierro's contract with the Real Madrid finalizes this season. Hierro is nervous because the club has still not said anything to him about renewing the contract. He has said to Radio Marca that he wants to know his future before december and that the money won't be any problem.

    What the club must do?

My opinion is that the clubs must renew him for one year for less money. Althought he won't be in the starting line-up the next year, he can be a very valuable player in many games. But if the club decides to not renew him, i think that the club must tell him the new before december for respect to a player that has been 14 in the club.

I don't think that we should let him go, he is along with raul, a symbol of our club. Yes he's getting slower and he won't start many games next season but Hierro should be allowed to finish his career in the club and move upstairs into the admnistration side of things. This, of course, is unless he wants to spend another few years at a smaller club, winding up his career.

Also, we've talked about the need for squad rotation and how we can't rotate central defenders because there isn't any back-up. I don't see us buying more than one (maaaaaaybe two) central defender next year, hardly enough to replace 3 losses in two years (Hierro, Karanka and Ivan Campo). We need him in the squad to give the defence some depth. A defence with say Helguera and Chivu with Hierro and Pavon as back-up/rotation would be much better than what we have now.

Helguera plays pretty good as a centreback but he prefers to play as a midfielder, who knows if VDB will use him in the midfield.

BTW anir check your pms pls

While it would be beautiful that Hierro retired from playing soccer in the team, he should only be here as long as the technical staff decides he's useful. That's what happenned with great players like Di Stefano, Butragueño or Pirri.

I know I'm not a madrid fan but that doesnt mean I don't know about spaniard footie history, sorry Dmar but Di Stefano signed for Espanyol once he realized the coach it was supposed to continue the next season I guess you know that.

Hierro is what, 33-34 years old? The injuries have slowed him down as we know. He was a great player but I hope he does not try to stay longer like some athletes who do not know when to retire.

He can do this two ways, finish up with Real Madrid this season or he could linger on another season, perhaps finish it all up with the club he came up with, Valladolid.

Just throwing out a couple scenarios. I like Hierro, hell I only have one Real Madrid player jersey and it's his.

Yeah, that's what I intended to say, I think I haven't explained myself well. Di Stefano went to Espanyol, Pirri to Puebla, el Buitre to Celaya... I wanted to say that those players had to leave the team, in spite of being mythical players, when they were no longer fit for the team. Such is -or should be- the level of exigence of the team. On the other hand, others -like Sanchís- managed to be useful 'till the end... or didn't decide to extend their careers at a lower level of competition.

And the case of Di Stefano was curious... I heard that Bernabeu or someone at the club told him that he should retire, that he was too good a player to thrash his reputation by continuing playing in such a diminished condition. But he didn't retire. Do you find some present day analogy in a different sport? ;)

Next season if Hierro is content to be a reserve, like Sanchis was in his final season, then I say let him stay around as he is one of the team's leaders. But if he's not content with such a role then maybe he can finish his career in say his native Malaga. Next year Hierro's skills will have deteriorated enough where he won't be able to start for Real Madrid.

I agree with you, that he is very valuable to the team behind the scenes. If anyone saw the CL game on Matchday 1 at Roma he did not look to quick and did not look like the Hierro of a couple years ago.
