790 the Zone here in Atlanta is "in contract negotiations" with Rome's distributor. Until at least the end of football season they are putting some local guys back on (I am fairly sure rome is their only syndicated show right now). In any case, here's your chance to call or email and let them know that you specifically avoided their station when rome was on -- weekdays 1p.m.-3p.m. -- and that you love the rest of their lineup, particularly Mayhem in the A.M. (as one of the station's owners and muckety-mucks is a co-host). 404-233-7979 steakshapiro@790thezone.com (umm...... needless to say, no one asked what zip code i was calling from when i called)
While it is true -- for example -- that to have one's daughter bring home Shapiro to meet the folks would lead one straight to the pepto, he seems to me to be genuinely interested in giving soccer a fair shake. The Zone's morning program broadcast live from a local pub during the ireland/germany game and during ireland's knockout round match. They had extensive rah-rah type talk before the u.s. germany match, and they have had interviews both with Mathis when he was in town and with Atlanta Beat coach Tom Stone. While I'm not sure i buy into the whole "Rome likes soccer... I can tell because he would have to know alot about it to bash it the way he does," school of thought, i do think that Shapiro et al are better for soccer in Atlanta. Also, i think rome is a tool, regardless of his opinion on soccer. dwb
I hope they wouldn't ask, because as soon as they found out I lived 10 miles outside the city, they would know I couldn't possibly pick that station up on any radio...unless it was sitting right next to the station's transmitter.
