I look at it like this, if the team has the money then by all means spend it on what you think will make it better. although i dont think he's worth that much, not taking away anything from his ability.

i kinda agree. im kinda new to soccer so do they not have salary caps??? it seems like you could get 3 or 4 above average players rather than one superstar?

No they dont have salary caps, and players earn a mint! Spending in football rocketed a few years ago, about the time when Mendieta was brought for 30 mill and Crespo for about 35 mill, ans Zidane 40 mill or something ridiculous like that, but things have calmed down since. Beckham went to Madrid this summer, arguably one of the best players in the world, and he cost 23 mill, and even this is based on technicalities such as how far Madrid go in the champions league etc. So your right, for 11 million euros, about 70 million pounds ( around 115 million dollars) you could get four or five of the best players in the world. Chelsea have the financial clout at the moment in world club football, but they still need to perform well, and prove they are capable of great things both domestically and in Europe before they can lure any player they want! Either way, Raul aint gonna be brought for 100 mill by anyone other than Chelsea!

spending that kind of money on raul, even if the club has it, would be stupidity. he is not worth more than 30.

Yeah I agree! I think that with the epsnding power Chelsea have, compared to other European clubs, they will surely be a great power within a few years though, I owuldnt be surprised if they made a riduculous offer like 100 mill this January when the transfer window re-opens. If you were a mangaer of any team though and someone offered 100 mill like they did for Raul, wouldnt you take it? I think the most surprising thing about the situation is that Madrid didnt sell!

Chelsea/Abramovic offered Raul earn 24M€ (12M€ free of taxes) each year, the double that he earn in Real Madrid. Raul said no.

And Real Madrid don't sell its big stars - Raul, Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham, Figo, Roberto Carlos. It's the policy of the club.

Anyway, the soccer market is not the same that three or four years ago, when the european TVs paid to the clubs a great money for the PPV rights. In these years, Real Madrid paid 70M$ for Zidane, 60M$ for Figo.

Now, the TVs only paid big numbers for the very big teams. For example, in spain, in its new contract RM receives even more money than before, but the the majority receives less money. The reason: the 54% of the PPV games that the people buy in spain are Real Madrid games, follow by Barcelona with a 24% and atletico de Madrid with 8%.

This year we have seen very few movement in the italian clubs. Manchester and Real Madrid are the only clubs that could continue signing by this big numbers. But the market isn't the same, and they know that they musn't sign a big star for more than 30-40M€.

Only Abramovic is moving the Market, but everybody knows that he is throwing the money, it is impossible recover the money that he is spending.if a big team tried to compete with Abramovic the result would be the bankruptcy in a sort period of time.

If Madrid doesnt sell its biggest stars how can you account for their selling Maklelele?

but he doesn't sell a lot of jersey's does he??

he's not that famous, but they still had to let him go because of his wage demands.

Still one of their best players. Who are they playing in a holding role now? I dont get to see much Spanish Footy and its a shame because its great football. Who'd of thought they would play Beckham in the centre? Also, Madrid have a rule whereby they buy one great player every year. Who do you think they will go for next summer? Surely not another midfielder or striker!!

although Makalele was very important to Madrid, he was never considered a 'star' and this is why Madrid ended up letting him go. that, and his behavior leading up to the transfer meant keeping him on the team was going to f*&k the team's chemistry.

Helguera is currently playing in the role of Makalele. Although he's been playing in central defense for years he's played midfield before. It will take time to see how this works out. Beckham has really impressed in central midfield so far, by the way.

I don't think Abramovich really thought he was going to land Raul. Raul is the soul of the Madrid team and the icon of Spanish football in general. Taking him away would be catastrophic for Madrid, psychologically. I think this was his way of telling Florentino Perez "look at how big my d*&k is. be very, very afraid."

I agree, as I said before, Chelsea will have start winning things if they are to lure the very best players in the world, but I think that very soon they will. They have the money at the momment and when they achieve success on the field, develop a better reputation, they will be able to get the very best players. Its quite unsporting of them though!!

Makelele isn't a big star, he is a very good player like Helguera, Salgado, Casillas, etc. Well, Casillas can be a big star.

Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Beckham has won or have been between the top 5 players in the Fifa world player or Golden ball awards many times in the last years. Makelele don't.
