With Heskey signed and Smicer and Berger expected to sign this weekend Houllier has everything in place for next season.

I would expect one more signing, hopefully Duff. But if not one other right midfield/winger sort of player and we are ready.

Gerrard will miss the friendly tomorrow as a precaution.

Good..! I like Emile, he takes a lot of BS from people who don't understand his role out there. But GH tells him where and how he wants him to play.

I just watched the Leeds - Liverpool highlights from last season again via the official web site when Emile scored two.

Reminded me how good he is (I still have the world cup stuck in my head).

With competition from Diouf. Emile will have to be sharp from the first kick off and I think he will be ready.

People who moan about him, don't have a clue. They get their opinions from commentators and can't form their own judgement.

LOL what a bizarre thread to bring up

I was like you Kop, always defending Ivanhoe. Couldn't believe why people were always slating him especially considering his work rate(he was almost playing like a wing back in the Barca game).

Even at Wigan I was defending him, it wasn't until he joined Birmingham City were I started to realize that he wasn't that good and it was a case of fan bias that rated him so high.

Anyone else feel the same or are there any ex-reds that you thought were boss and then realised they were pretty ordinary once they'd left?

Yes, a rather random thread to bump.

Heskey was a shirker, that's what always got me. When he was playing with confidence and had his dander up, he could be nigh on unplayable. But half the time he would crash around in the wrong area of the field ("workrate") but be a chocolate teapot where it matters, where he was being paid to make a difference.

The final straw with Heskey for me was a 2-1 home defeat to United in, I suppose, 2004. He was constantly a yard off the game or bustling about in midfield where none of the United players minded him in the least and then, with a couple of minutes to go, he missed an absolute sitter from about four yards out, right in front of the Kop. I was directly in line and about twenty rows back and I swear, if I could have got down there, I would have chinned him. Infuriating is not the word.

As to other reds who left and turned out nowhere near as good as the red spectacles made them look, there's a part of me that wants to say Michael Owen, but that would probably be unfair. Mascherano would be another. Hamann. Saunders. Collymore. Lee. Spackman. Clough (maybe, although he wasn't brilliant at LFC either to be honest, but I always had a spot for him).
