Niko Kovac is set to join Hertha Berlin, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Thursday. It means the Croatian international returns to the town he was born, grew up in and first played football."There is a basic agreement between the clubs and the player," Rummenigge said.

The player, Bayern general manager Uli Hoeneb and his Berlin counterpart and brother Dieter Hoeneb first met to discuss the proposed move at last weekend's DFB Cup final in the capital. The talks continued into this week and have now reached a positive conclusion."My assumption is that he'll be playing for Hertha next season,"the Bayern chairman continued.

The 31 year-old midfielder battler arived in Munich from Hamburg SV two seasons ago,"but hasn't been able to command a regular place place in the starting line-up,"Rummenigge observed. Kovac made a total of 34 Bundelsiga appearences for the newly-crowned champions and scored three goals.

"We have plenty of options in his position,"Rummenigge said, explaining the decision to let Kovac go,"we have to give a chance to the younger players such as Schweinsteiger and Hargreaves." In the season just ended, the defensive midfield berth was most often filled by Jens Jeremies.

It would also mean a reduction in the club's wage bill:"Its one man less on the payroll," Rummenigge commented.

Personally, I never really liked Niko Kovac.
