Just read on www.crewxtra.com the Sergio Herrera's days with the Crew are over. He will be released to make room for Burn's on the roster. Discuss Crew Nation!!
I think he should have been given more opportunities in actual games. He played for a few minutes and he contributed to a scoring play. I don't understand why he was never given another opportunity. I don't understand why Garey was continually preferred when he has never even scored despite having over 300 more minutes of playing time.
Agreed. Herrera truly had to be the worst practice player in history to fall and stay behind Lenhart/Garey.
The real question remains- Will we be able to sign Martin Palermo for $48,000 + Whatever else we have left?
The Colombians told us so, right? Once again Columbus and Colombians with Warzycha around are not a match made in names or syllables. Lessons learned for the global scouting dept.
Everybody pour one out for Ricci Greenwood tonight. For tomorrow, his Seven Minutes of Crew Glory will have been bested seven-fold. Herrera's record can never be broken.
Damn! From what i read I thought he was going to be good!!! Can someone give me a brief explanation of what happened? What games did he play? Was he hurt? What did the colombian posters say? What little things did he do good/ bad for you guys?
That was my first thought, too. You better get on this one, Notebook Man: Crew Soccer Nation demands a "Where are they now?" interview with Greenwood.
Yep, got to give it to the FO, Dike, Duka, and Herrera. Bravo! Herrera should have been given more pitch time, he has to be better than Lenny and Squiggy (I mean Garey).
So what now? Can we sign that Honda guy from japan or Gyan or hell, after how Rooney played we might be able to afford him now.
Hell, he's got the same track with Polish folk, too. I assume he helped bring Rzepa here. And let's not forget he was Danny's mentor.
The dude played one minute. Hard to say he should have been given more time. We dont know if he sucked in training. Its hard for us to say he needed to play more when none of us really saw him. Now why the FO signed him is another discussion. Explains that really low salary.
Hard to understand the calls for playing him more. We're cutting him. Apparently he impressed in scouting and on trial, but when he got his contract he couldn't even deliver in practice. Why would you play a guy who is being outperformed by our other forwards (like Lenhart and Garey)? I would mind getting Honda, tho that sure as hell won't happen. Matsui, OTOH, would be a nice addition to the midfield. And Kashima Antlers have a nice young forward named Koroki I wouldn't mind having. Now that is some funny shit right there. The reality is that he is stuck behind this crusty, old, washed up Argentine. Duka is 10 times the player.
The FO has some explaining to do on this one and their last few draft picks and acquisitions. Herrera was unimpressive the few friendlies I saw against the college kids and he apparently wasn't buying into the system. These things happen but the track record has not been good especially with strikers. Bright Dike was a mistake from the get go and all the experts were commenting at the time how strange it was to choose him in the first round. The jury is out on Duka and hopefully we will get to see what he can do against Rochester. Griffit looks promising but they have a glut of midfielders right now. I supported leaving Moreno unprotected as he was just not dangerous in the box, but the FO philosophy of having big strikers has just not been working so far.
Well, let's not go mixing up draft picks and discovery signings; they're two different animals. Not saying the Crew have chosen well in the draft department. Just pointing out that the talent available in the college draft isn't going to win anyone a championship. Only a small percentage of draftees contribute much in their rookie seasons, and that percentage drops further when we're talking about an offensive position. I'll point out, too, that when MLS axed the reserve league it did nothing to help develop young players like Duka. Rumor has it that MLS might bring back a more robust development league before too long. It's can't happen soon enough. The Herrera signing was a failure, pure and simple, but I think the FO has explained it in as much detail as they're likely ever to: the guy arrived in Columbus and sucked in practice. Never "clicked" as the entry says. I'm not any happier about this than anyone else is, but I would point out that as long as MLS can only afford to pay guys what they're currently paying them, the numbers of flops will far outweigh the successes. I agree, though, that the way Bob wants to create this team seems to be at odds with his ability to find the kind of talent to make that system work. I mean, did anyone here really, honestly expect Lenhart to have "a breakout year?" If you start out on a cross-country road trip in a 15 year old Chevette, you really shouldn't be shocked when you break down. Well, Bob went into this season seemingly expecting our striker corps to be good enough. Personally, I'm not shocked that it's failed to work out that way. Finally, re: Griffit, I disagree that we have a glut of midfielders, at least productive ones, of which IMO we have only one: Gaven. I was a big backer of Moffat, way back when, but have been sorely disappointed at his ability to make that central midfield spot his own. I think Gaven's been much better in that role, but he can't play in the middle and wide right at the same time. If Griffit can produce on the right side, I'd love to see Gaven slide into Moffat's spot on a more permanent basis. That said, I'll paraphrase what I said above: you get what you pay for. And we didn't pay much for Griffit. I really hope the guy pans out, but don't be shocked if he's not as good as we need him to be.
Does anyone have a problem with the draft system whereby 20-21 year olds are drafted into an MLS team and are likely not going to play for a season, and then probably are not going to see much playing time there after. And then you look at Germany/Ghana who have U21 talent breaking through to the senior national team in the world cup. Is the MLS capturing these players too old or is the college game of good enough coaching quality to nuture future USMNT talent?
Players in countries that lack our bizarre obsession with college sports develop younger, but that's a systemic problem alluded to by Jürgen Klinsmann on Sunday. I don't know how we get rid of it without a complete change in the way the sport is viewed and organized in the US.
I'd like to caution everyone about jumping on Jk's 'upsidedown pyramid' bandwagon. This aint nothing new. And one of the reasons I dont like him for US is he is trivializing the problem. Yeah.. he's right in the BIG picture... what he doesnt seem to understand is exactly how difficult it would be to reverse the culture. And, believe me, CULTURE is the operative word. It all starts on the street, doesnt matter WHO is funding it. It starts on the street and in the school hallways. And on the bedroom walls
