Yes, there is a cup on the line tomorrow night.Time to brush up on your Heritage Cup knowledge. #VamosSJhttps://t.co/Cp8xd9KPh3— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) September 29, 2019
This year presented a special challenge for scheduling the Heritage Cup. We waited hoping to hear the league schedule, but had to make a decision prior to the MLS is Back tournament. So the 2020 Heritage Cup game will be a a single, neutral-site game this Friday at 6 PM PST. The Quakes have not won the Cup since 2015, while Seattle displayed the Cup and used it in-stadium to promote their anniversary last year. In the event of a tie the prevailing eligible MLS team shall be: (a) the eligible MLS team which earns this highest group stage standing, following all tiebreakers set in the MLS is Back Tournament rules. (b) If the match is postponed and rescheduled to a definite date then that match shall become the Heritage Cup Match. (c) If the MLS is Back Tournament is rescheduled or postponed then these rules shall be adapted and published before the beginning of the tournament. (d) If the MLS is Back Tournament is cancelled then the Heritage Cup rule shall be revised to include any scheduled, competitive matches between the eligible teams. (e) If there are no competitive matches played between the eligible teams then the Heritage Cup will not be awarded for 2020. It will stay with the 2019 cup holders and be contested in the 2021 season. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Cup_(MLS) http://www.ssvcf.org/portfolio/the-heritage-cup/
Quakes won Heritage Cup 2020 tonight. They drew 0-0 with Seattle in tournament's first game, but won the tiebreaker by winning Group B. The last time San Jose won the Heritage Cup was in 2015.
Time once again for the annual Heritage Cup competition between Seattle and San Jose, which began in 2009. Since the two teams meet 3 times in 2021, the Wednesday, May 12, 2021 game in San Jose will be the “tiebreaker” game (if needed). The Cup will otherwise be decided by the results of the other two 2021 fixtures; July 7 in Seattle and September 11 in San Jose. The Cup will be awarded after the September 11 game. The Heritage Cup (unlike the Cascadia Cup and some other trophies) is not intended as a typical “rivalry” Cup. That is, the “Heritage” title is there because this Cup is honoring the fans and the players of the participating teams. These are the fans who have been there since NASL days, created the league, and are still here now with the same teams and the same name. This is a testament to them and a shared experience - within San Jose , within Seattle, and between both cities - of riding out the ups and downs of pro soccer, victories and defeats, team relocation, league closings etc. Below are links to information about the Cup’s origin, history, statistics, and rules. Quakes won the Cup in 2015. Seattle won in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. Due to the pandemic and uncertainty about regular season games being scheduled, the 2020 Heritage Cup was based upon the MLS is Back tournament. Quakes won in 2020. This season the competition reverts back to regular season games.
When we won the cup the first year the Ultras put way more than a pint into the Heritage Cup! I remember it holding over two beers easily, but they kept adding so I never got an accurate count.
Back in May, the Quakes had 3 wins and 1 loss and were competing with Seattle for the top spot in the West. The two teams will face each other again in 5 days with Seattle still at the top of the table and the Quakes … Saturday will be the latest game in the annual Heritage Cup. San Jose won the Heritage Cup in 2014 and 2015. Seattle won in 2016, 2017,2018, 2019. San Jose won in 2020. The Cup will be decided by the results of the July 31 game in Seattle and the September 29 game in San Jose, and awarded after the September 11 game. The May 12, 2021 game in San Jose, won by Seattle 1-0, is the “tiebreaker” game (if needed).
... surprised everyone on July 31st by winning 1-0 in Seattle. This means that on September 29th at PayPal Park the Sounders will take back the Heritage Cup if they win that game. A draw or an EQ victory means the Quakes will retain the Cup in 2021. No matter what the Western Division standings look like at game time, the 2021 Seattle/San Jose competition result will still be an open question.
I think it would be Almeyda's first trophy. This Wednesday, September 29th, Seattle and San Jose do conclude their 2021 series of games for the Heritage Cup. A draw or a San Jose victory means San Jose wins the Cup. (July 31 EQ 1-0 victory in Seattle plus the 9/29 result in San Jose). A Seattle win Wednesday night means Seattle takes the Cup (based upon their May 12 tiebreaker game 1-0 win in San Jose). San Jose has won the Heritage Cup five times - 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and 2020. Seattle has won the Heritage Cup seven times - 2010, 2011, 2013 2016, 2017,2018, 2019. As of this writing, Seattle has 48 points from 25 games, while San Jose has 33 points from 26 games.
Ten years ago. Wonder what this guy is doing now? (And thanks to TyffaneeSue for making this file usable):
Thanks for all the great posts NedZ! Technically though, the 2020 Heritage Cup was Almeyda's first cup with us.
Doh! Thanks for the correction. I passed that fact onto the broadcast team. Now someone needs to get MA's translator Agustin to explain that to him and that this Wednesday could make it two years in a row.
The Sounders definitive 3-1 victory last night means the Heritage Cup returns to Seattle for the eighth time.
For 2022 there is a balanced two-game regular season schedule between the two competing MLS teams. The Heritage Cup shall be awarded based on the results of the two matches of each participating team, with each team hosting one match, namely the April 23 match hosted by San Jose Earthquakes and the October 9 match hosted by Seattle Sounders FC, (Heritage Cup Matches). Three points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw. In other words, no matter what the MLS standings, and no matter what happens in CCL, with yesterday's 4-3 result at PayPal Park a draw or a win in October will see the Quakes take the 2022 Heritage Cup back from the Sounders..
Seattle and San Jose both out of the playoffs this season. The Heritage Cup is still up for grabs. Quakes need a draw or a win next Sunday, Seattle needs a home field victory.
