I've seen a number of guys doing this, and I have no idea why. I'm sure there's a very easy, very straightforward answer that any clown should know, but I don't. I thought that I had seen Blanco do it, but I just assumed it was a shout-out to his ancestry or something. So, can someone explain this one to me? Thanks.
bradd, I am disturbed by your choice of arnold pictures, as it is blatantly racist and supportive of neo-nazi culture. See, I'm being proactive and not reactive about the cultural problems that plague the soccer supporter culture
You are absolutely right Kaiser. I see the err of my ways and instead give you this: Which in all honesty is about as gross as the arnold pic. My attempts to de-sausagify this thread have pretty much failed.
Cuauhtémoc The name Cuāuhtemōc means "One That Has Descended Like an Eagle". Or Falling Eagle. The gesture that soccer players do is to imitate that of shooting a bow into the air and striking an eagle. From my point of view I see this as gesture of accuracy.
i was told that blanco does it for his namesake, cuauhtemoc, the aztec emperor. and that this was a way to show his respect/thanks/whatever to the Mexican people. trying to remember... there might be a painting or something where cauatemoc is shooting an arrow and that blanco's celebration is supposed to mimic that painting. (Edit: just clicked the link on hsh_b's post- that may be the painting?) now this made sense to me. and i always thought he looked stupid. then i was given this explanation and thought "well thats cool. be proud of your heritage and give respect to your fans." then i saw some others do it. and their names were not cuauhtemoc. then i saw torres do it in the euro and become really confused. i'm not a mexican historian but shouldn't the mexican's hate the spanish (i asked a mexican friend that question once and was told that it was an odd relationship because the spanish sorta took over the joint but many people are a mix of both native mexicans and spanish and the common culture, language, etc..)? well at least the cuauhtemoc references makes no sense since the spanish had him executed. if it is really just supposed to mean "accuracy" then i am going to go back to thinking it is a completely lame celebration.
It made sense to me that Blanco did it for the reasons that I heard, but I've seen Europeans doing it and then I got confused. Oh well, I'm just happy that there were at least a couple "real" answers in here.
Danny Guiza did it after scoring against Russia in the Euro semifinal. I was then told it was a "Spanish" celebration.
Is that Sindarin on Torres' forearm? And yes, "padawan" was spelled correctly earlier in the thread. (To protect my street cred, I've never been to a sciffy convention, and have never wanted to go to one.)
